Various groups, previously overlooked or minimally supported, will soon notice a significant impact on their bank accounts.
The activity bonus is a financial boost offered by CAF or MSA to working individuals over 18 with modest incomes. This applies to employees and self-employed persons, whether full-time or part-time: as long as there is professional activity and income does not exceed certain thresholds, eligibility is possible. Currently, over 4.5 million beneficiaries receive this benefit, covering nearly 9 million individuals. The aim is clear: to supplement income so that working pays more than unemployment.
The amount of the bonus is determined by several factors: household income, family composition, certain social benefits, and housing situation. A single person without children is not assessed in the same way as a couple with two children, and a single parent may receive a temporary increase. Calculations are automatically made based on quarterly reports, which are now largely pre-filled. Essentially, the bonus gradually decreases as salary increases, phasing out around 2,000 euros net per month for a single individual. This is exactly where the reform will make a difference.
Starting April 1, 2026, the scale will be adjusted to smooth the transition out of the program and broaden access at these income levels. The stated goal is straightforward: to prevent a small salary increase from causing a total loss of the bonus and to make the work incentive more noticeable. About three million households are expected to benefit, with an average increase of around 50 euros per month. However, individual circumstances will vary.
Consider a single person without children earning slightly more than 2,000 euros net per month. Previously, with a net income of 2,032 euros, for example, they received no bonus. From April 2026, they will become eligible and receive an activity bonus of 56 euros per month. For an employee in this income bracket, this represents more than 650 euros annually, with no additional paperwork if their situation remains unchanged.
For families, the impact is also significant. A couple with two children, both earning and bringing home a combined total of 3,566 euros net, currently receives 115 euros per month from the activity bonus. After the reform, this amount will increase to 169 euros, an additional 54 euros. The same logic applies to a couple with two children but only one income, around 1,854 euros net: the bonus will rise from 436 to 490 euros monthly, again an increase of 54 euros.
Note that single parents are not overlooked. Until now, a single mother or father with two children earning about 2,068 euros net per month received no bonus. As of April 1, 2026, this household will receive 68 euros per month. Annually, this amounts to over 800 euros—a significant financial boost.
