He thought he was rescuing a sheep—but it turned out to be something else
This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
What if we disconnected from the world for an hour?
Wellness centers are everywhere these days, both in big cities and increasingly in smaller towns. Yet, we decided to try out a unique and burgeoning concept in France that initially had us skeptical but ultimately won us over. Ready to explore?
Our appointment is set in Paris, at 45 rue de Trévise in the 9th district. It’s perfect for a romantic getaway, though you can also visit alone or with a group. “We recently hosted a bachelorette party,” founders Ingrid and Mickael share with us. Upon arrival, the space is meticulously designed with natural materials like wood and stone, creating a calm and soothing atmosphere. “This was our vision, and we carefully selected colors that reflect our project,” they continue. After two years of renovations, they opened in January 2025. Everything is provided: robes, towels, flip-flops… You need bring nothing except perhaps a swimsuit. Once changed, Mickael leads us to the first part of the experience: the Nordic sauna. For 15 minutes, we indulge in a steam bath designed to cleanse the body of toxins, relax the muscles, and prepare the body for the next treatment. It’s a disconnecting experience, but we’re eagerly anticipating what’s next…
Soon, Mickael escorts us to the centerpiece of the facility: a room fitted with large wooden bathtubs and… beer taps. We now have 30 minutes to enjoy a beer bath in this private space. And any initial doubts quickly dissipate. There’s no beer smell in the room (a relief for those who might not enjoy the aroma), nor does the beer stick to the skin when we slip into the bubbling water heated to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Instead, the beer bath is crafted from an infusion of beer-making ingredients: malt, hops, and yeast. “These ingredients contain minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that help soften and nourish the skin, strengthen hair, and relax the joints,” explain our gracious hosts at the Royal Beer Spa of Paris. Rediscovering the pleasure of a bath with a partner, away from everyday life, enhances intimacy perfectly.
“The tradition of beer baths dates back to the Middle Ages. We discovered it on a trip to the Czech Republic and decided to bring it back to Paris and open our own beer spa,” Mickael continues. A selection of light craft beers is available to refresh during the bath, as well as fruit juices like strawberry, violet, and rose for those who prefer non-alcoholic options.
It’s time to leave the bath, though we could have happily stayed longer, to discover the final part of the journey: the salt room. Surrounded by lights and walls of Himalayan salt, “this step is crucial for the skin to absorb the minerals and vitamins from the bath. You’ll also enjoy the respiratory benefits of the salt,” Ingrid explains. These are our last 15 minutes in this cocooning space, cut off from the outside world. Our hosts then guide us back to the “Locker Area” where showers, mirrors, combs, hair dryers, and body lotion (still hop-infused) allow us to freshen up before heading out. Once we step outside, we both agree on the rejuvenating effects of this romantic escape.
Info: 1-hour session (30 minutes of beer bath) starts at $75 per person or a 1.5-hour session (60 minutes of beer bath) from $100 per person. The experience is entirely private. Available daily from 11 AM to 11 PM by reservation. Find the Royal Beer Spa on Instagram.
