The Rationale Behind This Therapy
There are two main styles of Thai massage: the Royal style and the common folk style. In the Royal style, the masseur uses only their thumbs for the massage techniques, whereas the folk style incorporates the use of elbows, knees, and feet in addition to thumbs.
Both styles aim to stretch the muscles to release both physical and mental tension. It’s a passive experience for the client who just needs to relax, but it’s quite a physical endeavor for the masseur. This involves strong pressure—known as acupressure, akin to acupuncture but without needles—and very gentle movements that barely touch the skin.
So, what’s the purpose? Like all massage therapy practices, Thai massage helps alleviate anxiety and fosters a general state of well-being through a moment of psychocorporal consciousness awakening. It also positively affects the body by promoting muscle relaxation, good digestion, toxin elimination, and the proper function of vital organs. These techniques are part of a health vision based on the proper use of the body’s energy.
What Actually Happens During a Thai Massage?
First off, you remain clothed throughout the procedure, so it’s essential to wear loose, flexible, and comfortable clothing. There’s no worry about massage oil staining your clothes since the massage is performed without it, relying solely on the strength of the masseur. You lie down on a mattress or futon on the floor and relax: the session lasts at least two to three hours. While that might seem lengthy, it’s the recommended duration to achieve the level of relaxation necessary for easing both muscles and mind.
The massage begins at the feet, which reflect the condition of the rest of the body and guide the masseur on how to proceed. The session alternates between moments of strong pressure and light touches. After a few minutes, you’ll be asked if the pressure is comfortable. As the session progresses, the masseur guides you through various yoga-derived positions, mixing delicate gestures with stronger movements. You don’t need to be especially flexible to enjoy all the benefits of Thai massage, as the intensity of the movements and the flexibility required for each position are tailored to the client. This massage aims to improve flexibility and blood circulation, not to cause soreness. After all, how can you relax and refocus your energy if you’re silently suffering?
