When the temperature spikes, making love can quickly turn into a physical exertion… sometimes a bit too much. A sexologist shares her top tip for maintaining pleasure despite the heat.
When the temperature outside hits 95°F, the idea of getting frisky doesn’t exactly sound appealing. We sleep poorly, feel lethargic, and sweat more quickly. Yet, summer is still the time when couples often find more moments for themselves. With vacations on the horizon, longer days, and a decrease in mental load, the desire is often there… but the body doesn’t always keep up. Fortunately, Laure Senemaud-Carriquiry, a sexologist and spokesperson for Intimina in France, shares the best way to enjoy one’s sex life during hot weather without breaking into a sweat!
Heat is anything but a stimulant. “As the external temperature rises, our body temperature also increases,” explains Laure Senemaud-Carriquiry. This leads to “lethargy, poor sleep, and exhaustion that are not conducive to sexual activity.” During sexual activity, the body works harder. The heart races, breathing quickens, blood pressure spikes at climax, and energy is expended as if we were physically exercising. Consequently, if your apartment already feels like an oven, the body can quickly become overwhelmed. So what can we do?

There’s a way to make love in the heat without feeling hot: it’s called slow sex. “Slow sex is about engaging in sex slowly, with full awareness, providing a break in our hectic ‘instant gratification’ lives!” summarizes the sexologist. The idea is to stop rushing towards the goal and enjoy the journey. “Slow sex is perfectly suited for heatwaves due to its very essence, which involves slow, gentle, and non-performance-based sex!” explains the sexologist.

The body gradually warms up, “like a diesel engine, not like a Formula 1!”. Take time for caresses, kisses, and forget about performance. “Exploring gently allows for the stimulation of sometimes unsuspected erogenous zones and the creation of new sensations.” The body tires less quickly and handles the effort much better. For Laure Senemaud-Carriquiry, this is “the ideal solution to maintain sexual activity when it’s very hot.”
Additionally, the sexologist recommends opting for the coolest times of the day to make love, such as very early in the morning. “Why not start the day by making love very slowly?” she suggests. The setting also matters. An air-conditioned room can make a difference, as can a well-equipped hotel or, more surprisingly, “the workplace when everyone has left… or not!” Other adjustments can also enhance comfort. The spooning position requires little effort and each person can choose to stay more or less close depending on the temperature. Under the shower, a stream of lukewarm or cold water can instantly cool things down. A tiled floor can also become an ally in extreme heat. And if penetration doesn’t appeal, there are other ways to arouse. Massages with oil kept in the refrigerator, caresses, ice cubes, feathers, misters, or even pre-chilled sex toys can awaken sensations differently.
