Research consistently shows that while one in three Americans struggles with sleep, a powerful sleep aid is often overlooked: sexual pleasure.

Falling asleep can be a nightmare for many. We’re not even considering the middle-of-the-night awakenings, sleep apnea, or other stresses that ruin the nights of millions. Some statistics are particularly startling: according to an Ipsos survey, 63% of Americans report sleeping poorly, which is surprising given the myriad of solutions available on the market… and especially those free and effective ones that Mother Nature offers…

One often overlooked natural solution is sexual pleasure. It is undoubtedly one of the best allies for good sleep. “In our daily lives, we often shift from a highly stimulating environment – work, screens, notifications – to the sleep environment without a proper transition. An evening ritual centered on pleasure can create this transition phase towards rest and enhance the natural calming process,” argues Melanie Eichhorn, a sexologist for Satisfyer. And all research supports this, including one study published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, which found that 64% of people sleep better after sexual activity or self-pleasure.

The reason is primarily physiological: at the moment of orgasm, the brain releases a wonderful natural cocktail of hormones into the body. “Oxytocin, often called the ‘cuddle hormone,’ fosters a sense of emotional security. The body also releases endorphins, natural painkillers that provide a sense of well-being, as well as prolactin, associated with sexual satisfaction and the feeling of relaxation. Meanwhile, cortisol levels, the stress hormone, decrease,” details Melanie Eichhorn. This combination is ideal for helping the body transition into rest.

Studies have also shown that orgasms reduce blood pressure, facilitating the body’s shift into “recovery” mode. This rest is of higher quality because orgasms increase the deep sleep phase, where real recovery occurs. Engaging in sex can thus improve sleep quality. Whether alone or with a partner, masturbation can also be a natural way to create a state akin to meditation, shifting focus from daily stress to physical sensations,” explains the sexologist.

For those looking for a little extra help, certain sex toys can promote quicker relaxation than others. The sexologist suggests opting for clitoral stimulators, “particularly popular” for their gentle, non-frictional effect on the clitoris. For an even more relaxing atmosphere, consider using lavender in the form of essential oils or massage oils. Ready to give it a try?

Satisfyer suggests the following evening ritual: Satisfyer Dreamy Sheep ($44.95), Satisfyer-Lavender Massage Oil ($14.95), and “High Touch Meditation’s library of guided meditations,” free on the Satisfyer Connect app.
