This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
After turning 60, your beauty routine needs an overhaul: focus on rich moisturizers, and eliminate a common practice that damages your skin barrier and accelerates wrinkling. Find out which habit to quit immediately.
Every decade brings its own skin characteristics. New life stages require adjustments in your skincare routine. In younger years, the skin fully renews itself every 28 days on average. However, as time passes, this natural regeneration process slows down. There’s also a decrease in the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Sebaceous glands produce less oil, potentially leading to dry skin. Our skin becomes thinner and more fragile, making it more susceptible to external damage. “This is somewhat the age of greatest risk, where the efforts we’ve made over the past 40 years really start to pay off. Conversely, any excesses will also leave permanent marks: more wrinkles, dull complexion, enlarged pores… A rather unflattering mix!“, writes Charlotte Daubet, journalist and author, in her book Beauty Book – Feeling Good in My Skin Season by Season.
Clearly, at 60, the skin’s needs are not the same as they were at 20 or 30. The secret? Double down on moisturizing and nourishing creams with a comforting texture, use an ultra-gentle cleanser, and adopt the right daily practices. “To continue protecting our skin from external attacks, we can rely on treatments with vitamin B, which strengthen its defenses“, the expert continues in her book. However, there is one habit to eliminate from your routine according to Charlotte Daubet: “Stop using scrubs that become too abrasive due to the thinness of our skin“, she writes. It’s time to ditch the grainy products that damage the face.
However, this does not mean you should stop exfoliating altogether. On the contrary. This mechanism allows mature skin to stimulate cell regeneration and helps remove dead skin cells, thus making the complexion more radiant. But scrubs with grains can create micro-tears that damage the skin barrier. This leads to the exact opposite of the desired effect: accelerated aging of the skin. Instead, opt for chemical exfoliants, particularly those with acids. Yes, the term might sound scary, but it actually refers to a very gentle action. Molecules like lactic acid are often more respectful of mature skin than manual scrubbing, as they work by dissolving the “glue” between dead cells without disrupting the lipid barrier.
The rule of thumb after 60? Less friction, more care. Swap your grains for gentle acids: your skin barrier will thank you.
