Farmers Outraged! What Shoppers Do at Markets That’s Totally Unacceptable

We’ve all seen someone do this at the market, but it’s hardly a behavior to emulate. A local farmer reminds us why such actions are inappropriate!

The atmosphere at a market is distinct from that of regular stores. Its informal setting encourages interaction and conversation with vendors. The vibrant, unpackaged fruits and vegetables sometimes tempt us to handle them, a habit that isn’t always appreciated by the producers. However, there’s something even more troubling. A local farmer shared his frustration after an encounter with a customer: this type of behavior is completely out of place, yet many of us still engage in it.

Field-grown tomatoes, new potatoes, artichokes, Roscoff onions—everything on this Breton farmer’s stall is local and seasonal. Yet, the customer in front of us doesn’t seem to care about the origin of the vegetables. What she’s primarily concerned about is the price: “How much are the cherry tomatoes?“, she asks. “$2.50 for a 250g pack“, the farmer responds, pointing to the label. Unhappy with the answer, she presses on: “And if I take two, is it the same price?“. “Yes, ma’am, we don’t offer discounts for larger quantities“, the vendor replies. We then watch her turn on her heel and leave the line. “What nerve!“, the farmer mutters after she leaves. “Can you imagine someone doing that in a store? No, because it just isn’t done.” Just because it’s a market, customers assume prices are negotiable. This might be common in tourist spots or in countries where haggling is culturally accepted, but not everywhere. Indeed, here, prices are set based on specific criteria, the farmer reminds us. Costs of raw materials, labor, transportation… these often barely cover their expenses in the final price calculation, and trying to bargain with them is highly disrespectful… Something to remember next time!

The market is a friendly place where conversations flow easily… but price haggling isn’t really part of that. Producers set their prices with the quality and effort behind each product in mind. So, it’s better to enjoy these moments for engaging discussions and learning tips from them, all while soaking in the unique market atmosphere.
