This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Don’t be fooled: this process should never cost you money! Yet, many people are pulling out their credit cards.
While some administrative documents are mandatory, others are crucial for daily activities. Typically, you must carry documents like your passport, ID card, driver’s license, and sometimes a family record book with you when you travel or move around. While some of these documents come with a fee, others are completely free. This often causes confusion: many people in France do not realize they shouldn’t be paying to replace certain documents. Unfortunately, this confusion has opened the door for scammers.
These scammers skillfully mimic official government websites, and often, their deceit goes unnoticed. As a result, more and more people are being tricked into paying a fee on these fake sites to replace a document that is actually free, and they end up never receiving the document. A recent example is a fraudulent website that was caught offering to process a preliminary request for a national identity card for 39 euros for adults and 29 euros for minors, promising “processing within 48 hours.” The site seems legitimate at first glance because it uses an acronym for the national identity card: cni-fra.fr.
According to reviews posted since December 2024, many people have been fooled. What’s worse is that during the process, users end up providing all their personal information. Many have tried to cancel their requests or get refunds, to no avail. “This site should be banned. It charges for an administrative procedure for a preliminary national ID request that is normally free. Avoid it!” commented one user in February last year.
To ensnare even more victims, this site has also been “sponsored” to appear among the top search results on Google. Be careful, this scam could cause significant damage in the coming weeks if you’re not careful. Indeed, since March 31, 2025, the government has announced that it is possible to renew your identity card for free. “This pilot scheme aims to speed up the adoption of digital identities in France by easing access to the electronic identity card, which is the size of a credit card (CNIe),” states the official French administration website. With this new initiative, renewal requests are expected to increase, so stay vigilant.
