Renewal Requirements for French Driver’s Licenses
Discussing administrative procedures usually makes people tune out, but these steps are crucial for accessing certain benefits, services, or obtaining official documents. There’s one document that millions of French people hold which now requires renewal. Previously valid indefinitely, as of 2013, it must be renewed every 15 years. This change aligns with a regulation implemented across all European Union member states. If you keep up with the news, you might have heard that the traditional “pink license” is soon to be obsolete.
Every motorist will need to switch their driver’s license to a “credit card” format (known as “ID1”), which has been issued to all new drivers since 2013. The final deadline to make this change is set for 2033. While it might seem distant, it is highly recommended to start the renewal process now. To do so, simply apply online through the ANTS website (National Agency for Secure Documents). This process is free, except for the cost of the identity photo. You will need to provide your old license, proof of residence, an identity document, and a digital photo-signature.
Why You Shouldn’t Delay
Delaying this update could lead to several issues. If you wait until the last minute, local government offices might be overwhelmed with requests, leading to longer waiting times. More importantly, by 2033, if you’re still holding a “pink” license during a traffic stop, it will no longer be valid, making you subject to legal penalties. Generally, the fine for failing to present a valid driver’s license is about 11 euros, but it can increase to 33 euros. If you fail to present your document at a police station within 5 days, the fine can soar up to 750 euros, according to the Public Service website.
It’s now official that “driving licenses with categories A or B are valid for 15 years. Renewing them is an administrative procedure that does not require a medical or driving test. It’s an opportunity to update your home address and photo,” as stated on the France Titres website. However, professional licenses for category C or D (heavy vehicles, public transport) have a shorter validity period of 5 years and require regular medical checks.
