To completely eliminate head lice, heed the advice of Dr. Arezki Izri, a parasitologist and medical entomologist. He shares his tips for effectively eradicating them and preventing their return.

At school, children often swap hair ties and hats, which facilitates the spread of lice even in clean hair. Although lice are a year-round nuisance, outbreaks spike in the summer due to heat and humidity, as well as after school resumes. If your child starts scratching their head, check close to the scalp, especially behind the ears and at the nape, as these are common hiding spots for lice and their nits.

How to Tell the Difference Between Lice and Nits?

If you notice a small gray dot on a strand of hair, it might be a louse, often filled with blood. A white dot, on the other hand, is likely a nit, a louse’s egg. To test, pinch the dot between your thumb and forefinger: “If it sticks and cannot be removed except by sliding along the hair, it’s probably a nit,” explains Public Health France in its guide on lice and nits.

What Daily Practices Help Prevent Head Lice?

To prevent your child from getting lice, regularly check their head, at least once a week. If they have long hair, keep it tied up to minimize contact with others. Teach them to avoid head-to-head contact with peers and not to share hats. Lastly, avoid preventative treatments, which are unnecessary and could make lice more resistant.

How to Quickly Get Rid of Head Lice?

To eliminate lice quickly, apply a lice treatment product to dry hair, and leave it as directed. Then, wash your child’s hair with a gentle shampoo and water. Use a fine-toothed lice comb (at least 1.5 inches long) to manually remove any remaining lice and nits. Clean the comb on disposable paper between each pass. Dry the hair with a hairdryer. A follow-up application should be done a week later to kill any newly hatched lice. Regularly check your child’s head to see if additional treatment is needed.

Treat the entire family to prevent spreading and inform the school and your contacts. “The ideal situation would be for everyone’s heads to be checked and those with lice treated on the same day, say a Saturday, because an untreated head can re-infest others and the cycle starts over,” notes the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education.

What Are the Best Lice Treatment Products for Children?

To treat head lice, consider a standard local treatment such as shampoos, lotions, or repellent sprays. However, be sure to avoid lice products that contain insecticides. Dr. Arezki Izri advises: “Studies show their effectiveness at a specific moment, but they are not as harmless as they seem.” He also cautions against essential oils: “Used concentrated and repeatedly, they are very toxic to insects, but also to children. No study has proven their safety regarding children and their effectiveness against lice,” our expert adds.

It is therefore better to choose lice treatment products without insecticides, free from parabens, alcohol, and formulated with natural active ingredients, gentler on a child’s scalp. For example, products containing coconut or sweet almond oil suffocate lice and dislodge nits without harming the child’s scalp. Apply this treatment once a week for two to three weeks. There is no need to switch oils, as there is no risk of resistance.

Does Vinegar Help Eliminate Head Lice?

Pure vinegar is mainly effective at detaching nits, but that’s where its usefulness ends. Therefore, I recommend using it cautiously by diluting a tablespoon in a glass of water,” advises Dr. Arezki Izri.
