Few people consider it, but in the event of a burglary, this makes a significant difference in how much you’re compensated.
When a burglary occurs, many expect to be fully reimbursed for their losses. However, the reality often falls short. The fine print of insurance contracts, the required documentation, and set deadlines can leave many victims with compensation far below their expectations. Some find out too late that they didn’t comply with their insurer’s stipulations, while others struggle to prove the value of their belongings due to a lack of receipts. This often-overlooked detail—keeping purchase receipts and photographs of valuable items—can greatly impact the compensation you receive from your insurance company.
On the social media platform TikTok, insurance broker Nathalie Keskin clearly states: “to be compensated for a burglary, you need either the purchase receipts or a prior appraisal of your furniture”. Yet, in daily life, few remember to keep their purchase receipts. Once the item is acquired, the receipt often ends up in the trash, even though it serves as a proof of purchase. Without it, insurers may deny compensation or offer an amount much lower than the item’s actual value.
So, what should you do? The expert suggests a simple habit: scan or photograph important receipts as soon as you can. “But what if the receipts are stolen during the burglary? How do we handle that?” a user asked under Keskin’s video. For this, there are several options: digitize your documents and send them “to an email folder labeled ‘receipts,'” or save them “to the cloud” or on Google Drive, Keskin elaborates. The idea is to keep a record of your personal documents in a secure online location.
Another option, for those who have a safe deposit box at a bank, is to store your most important purchase receipts there, or even photographs of your family heirlooms with, if possible, an appraisal done beforehand to certify their value. By taking these steps, there should be no reason for your insurer to deny your claim!
