He thought he was rescuing a sheep—but it turned out to be something else
This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
When Isabelle goes shopping, nothing is left to chance. A regular at her local store, she knows the aisles like the back of her hand and snatches up every deal.
Saturday, 10 AM sharp: there you are at Leclerc, determined to find the best deals. Aisle by aisle, you keep your eyes peeled for discounts. You can’t afford to miss any savings! From white grapes to canned green beans, and even at the deli counter, you meticulously compare prices. The result? You’ve saved over 10 dollars. However, at the next checkout, another shopper quickly bursts your bubble. With fewer items in her cart, she manages to save more than 30 dollars! You feel cheated… You’ve just encountered Isabelle! In the aisles, this Leclerc veteran grabs all the promotions. She revealed all her secrets in an episode of Capital that aired on M6 on September 7, 2025.
Isabelle lives in Pont-l’Abbé and has been loyal to E.Leclerc for years. She shops there weekly. But before she even steps foot in the store, she always checks the weekly catalogue. Inside, most deals are listed: based on her usual purchases, she pre-selects the promotions. “Buy 2 products, get 1 free”; “the second product at 50% off” are some of the deals that catch her immediate attention.
But more importantly, “she has a crucial advantage: her store loyalty card, stored right on her phone,” explains the journalist. “It grants her access to special offers, exclusive to subscribers.” -10% off deli cheeses, -34% off bottled water, or -10% off fruits and vegetables. “That day, about a hundred products were available to cardholders,” Capital notes. This discount isn’t applied directly at checkout but is credited to her account in the form of ‘Leclerc Tickets’ which she will use on her next visit. The total savings? By combining all the discounts, she manages to slash her grocery bill by 20%! “Instead of paying 181.06 euros, today I paid 160.67 euros,” the customer proudly shares. She saves about twenty dollars, plus an additional 13 dollars credited in Leclerc Tickets. “Not bad,” Isabelle concludes with a small, satisfied smile, adding, “It’s actually very good!” These small habits add up to significant savings over time. Since January 1, 2025, Isabelle has saved a total of 460 euros on her groceries.
If there’s one lesson from this story, it’s that saving money isn’t just for the savvy few. It primarily relies on simple habits: previewing catalogues in advance, activating subscriber-exclusive offers, and understanding the most common promotional tactics. Nothing groundbreaking, but when applied diligently, these habits make a real difference. Next time, it might be your neighbor at the checkout who looks at you in awe: Isabelle no longer holds the monopoly on scoring great deals.
