Sam Mendes Likely to Step Away from James Bond Series
Sam Mendes, known for directing the James Bond hits “Skyfall” and “Spectre,” indicated in a conversation with Inverse that his days of directing 007 might be behind him. He suggested that the franchise’s leadership, including producer Barbara Broccoli and now Amazon MGM Studios, tend to favor rising directors who they can more easily influence.
“They prefer directors who are somewhat more pliable, those who are just beginning to make a name for themselves, possibly seeing this as a big break, and who the studio can more easily guide,” Mendes explained.
While Mendes didn’t completely rule out the possibility of returning with a casual “never say never,” he hinted it’s unlikely. “I would doubt it,” he admitted. The experience was beneficial for him at the time, breaking him out of creative ruts and expanding his horizons. “It required a great deal of energy,” he added.
In a previous discussion with Deadline in 2022, Mendes expressed his desire to see a woman at the helm of the next Bond film. “As the portrayal of Bond evolves, so should the direction of the films. A female director would be a fantastic progression,” he remarked.
The Future of James Bond
With Daniel Craig having left his role as Bond, with his final appearance in 2021’s “No Time to Die,” speculation swirls around his successor, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson frequently mentioned. Broccoli has yet to confirm any details about the upcoming Bond.
In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, Broccoli shared her thoughts on the direction of the franchise. “These films mirror the times they’re made in. There’s a long road ahead in reinventing Bond for the next era, and we’re just getting started,” she stated.
Despite discussions about evolving the character, James Bond will remain male. Broccoli was clear: “He was originally written as a male, and I think he’ll stay that way. We don’t need to change male characters into women. Instead, we should focus on creating more female characters and crafting stories around them.”
As the Bond saga continues to unfold, fans eagerly await the next chapter, curious about the new directions the franchise may explore while staying true to its roots.
