Wong Kar-wai Triumphs with “Blossoms Shanghai” at Busan International Film Festival

The acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai marked his series debut with “Blossoms Shanghai,” capturing two prestigious awards at the Busan International Film Festival’s sixth Asia Contents Awards and Global OTT Awards. Held this past Sunday, the ceremony saw the Tencent Video production from China win accolades for best creative and best male lead actor, awarded to Hu Ge.

Top Honors Across Asia

Indonesian directors Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah were awarded best director for their work on the Netflix series “Cigarette Girl.” In the acting categories, Ariel Lin secured the best female lead actor award for her role in “Imperfect Us,” a series from PTS Taiwan.

The Korean show “Boyhood,” streamed on Coupang Play, was recognized as the best OTT original series. Meanwhile, “1286” from Salem Entertainment in Kazakhstan took home the award for best Asian content.

In supporting roles, Ahn Jaehong and Yeom Hye-ran were honored with the male and female supporting actor awards for their performances in Netflix’s Korean series “Mask Girl.” The award for best male acting newcomer was shared by Chae Jong-heop for the Japanese show “Eye Love You” on TBS Television and Kim Yo-han for the Korean Netflix series “A Killer Paradox.” Best female acting newcomer went to Nimura Sawa for her role in “Shut Up,” broadcast by Telepack in Japan.

Writer Ju Hwa-mi was recognized for her work on the Korean series “The Atypical Family,” produced by SLL, winning best writer.

Rising Stars and People’s Choice

The rising star of the year award was presented to several notable talents including Anson Kong from the Hong Kong and China show “Warriors Within 2,” Jo Yoonsu from the Disney+ Korean series “The Tyrant,” and Miyoshi Ayaka from Telecom Staff Japan’s “Globe-Trotter Travel Guidebook.” Byeon Woo-seok and Kim Hyeoon clinched the people’s choice award for their roles in “Lovely Runner,” a collaboration between CJ ENM Studios and Bon Factory from Korea.

Excellence in Reality TV and More

The best reality and variety category saw winners from Thailand and Korea, with Workpoint Group’s “2 Faces” and Eggiscoming’s “Jinny’s Kitchen 2” both receiving accolades.

Outstanding visual effects were recognized in Netflix’s “Parasyte: The Grey,” and the best original song award went to Tanya Chua for her song “Learn to Live Again” featured in “Imperfect Us.”

Lastly, the creative beyond border award was presented to Tving’s Korean documentary series “Shaman: Whispers from the Dead,” and the new technology prize was awarded to the Korean streaming service Kocowa.
