Just five minutes a day, no expensive equipment, and noticeable results in a few weeks. Originating in Japan, this effortless and painless exercise has captivated people worldwide.

Social media has embraced it as almost a mystical ritual: a five-minute exercise designed to transform your figure, straighten your back, and soothe stress. This Japanese technique is based on a solid anatomical principle: the connection between pelvic alignment, breathing, and body weight distribution. The originator of this method, Dr. Tokushi Fukutsudzi, is an expert in reflexology and spent over a decade researching how slight postural adjustments could enhance physical health.

Initially, his goal wasn’t to create a new fitness trend but to understand why so many people were plagued with lower back pain, muscle fatigue, and abdominal slackness. He believed these imbalances were not necessarily due to a lack of exercise but often a result of poor chronic posture. Focusing on the structure of the pelvis and the role of deep muscles, he concluded that simple repositioning of the body could remedy many issues, provided it was done daily. This insight led to his now-viral method.

What Dr. Fukutsudzi offers isn’t about rapid weight loss or crafting a magazine-worthy physique. It’s about resetting the body to its natural alignment. He explains that when the pelvis tilts forward or backward, it throws the entire posture off: the abdominals weaken, the back arches, breathing becomes shallower, and the center of gravity shifts. This misalignment can lead to a buildup of tension and often, that persistent “spare tire” that no diet seems to defeat. The exercise he recommends helps realign this foundational part of the body, kickstart abdominal breathing, and restore core strength.

Contrary to what one might think, this isn’t about planking or engaging in complex belly breathing. It simply requires a towel. Yes, just a regular bath towel rolled into a cylinder. You then lie down on the floor, preferably on a firm surface, and place the towel under your back. Your legs are straight, with feet touching so that the big toes meet. Your arms stretch above your head, palms facing down, with pinkies touching. By holding this position for five minutes, without moving and breathing slowly, gravity does the work for you. The towel supports the back, the ribcage opens up, and the abdominals realign.

After a few sessions, the body begins to remember this alignment, leading to a more streamlined silhouette and smoother breathing, all contributing to a flatter stomach. Inspiring!
