Jenna Bush Hager’s Emotional Response to Tragic Flooding at Texas Camp

On a recent episode of the “Today” show, the journalist opened up about her strong connections to Camp Mystic, where a tragic event led to the deaths of 27 campers and counselors.
Bush Hager, daughter of former First Lady Laura Bush, shared with co-host Craig Melvin that her mother served as a counselor at the camp. “My mom was a counselor there,” she said.
“A lot of my friends grew up at this camp,” she continued, noting the deep roots many Texas families have with such camps. “These camps are like institutions in Texas, with multiple generations from the same families attending. Camp Mystic, for example, has been around for over a century.”
The 43-year-old teared up as she remembered her mother’s role as a drama counselor and reflected on the fact that many of her friends had children attending the camp the previous week.
Bush Hager praised the resilient spirit of Texans, describing them as generous and always ready to lend a hand. “Texas camps hold a special place in our hearts,” she added.
As rescue operations continued, Bush Hager mentioned the poignant and uplifting stories emerging from the tragedy. She paid tribute to the camp’s owner, Richard “Dick” Eastland, who died while trying to rescue campers during the flood.
“The Eastland family is considered royalty in Texas. Dick Eastland was like a summer father to many girls, including several of my friends,” she recounted. “He nurtured a spirit of bravery and love in the campers, a legacy that will surely endure.”
Bush Hager, a mother of three, shared her personal connection to Texas camps, revealing that she had just sent her own children—Mila, 12, Poppy, 9, and Hal, 5—to another camp in Texas with her husband, Henry Hager.
She expressed the mixed emotions of sending her children away for the summer, emphasizing the love and growth that camp environments provide. “We send our children out into the world hoping they will lead happy, joyful lives. As parents, we’re aware of the pain in the world and hope to shield them from it as much as possible,” she explained.
The flood claimed the lives of at least 82 people, including 28 children. The county sheriff reported that eleven campers and one counselor were still missing, with several others unaccounted for, highlighting the scale of the disaster.
