Hunter would notice his father’s vice-presidential convoy, a lineup of official SUVs, arriving at his notorious DC residence—a place he shared with a deceitful crack dealer who became his close companion.
“My dad showed up. He literally showed up at the house twice, you know, and just knocked on the door,” Hunter shared on a recent episode of the well-known addiction podcast, Dopey.
During the podcast, host David Manheim inquired whether Joe Biden ever encountered Hunter’s roommate—nicknamed “Bicycles,” a homeless person who initially provided Hunter with crack and later moved in with him. “I think he ran into her,” Hunter mentioned.
Hunter described the repeated instances when his father would visit: “He’d call and he’d call, and then… he would literally drive over with a motorcade, as minimal as he could make it.”
Describing what it was like when his father arrived, Hunter said, “I’d look out my window because I’d hear all these cars, and you’d see like six SUVs pull up and my dad get out and walk with one or two Secret Service guys because they have to be next to him. And I’d hear a knock on my door, and I’d open it, and there I would be, clearly in distress.”
He recalled his father pleading with him, asking, “‘Please, like, what are we gonna do tomorrow? What’s the plan?’ And I’d say, I got a plan, and this is what it is.”
Shortly after these interactions, in 2018, Hunter embarked on what Manheim referred to as a “crack road trip” to Hollywood, eventually checking into the renowned Chateau Marmont.
“I come out to LA and I check into the Chateau Marmont,” Hunter recounted about the famous celebrity hangout. “It was 100% like something out of a movie. That’s the spot… and I lived in one of the bungalows for about close to two months.”
When the topic of John Belushi, who overdosed at the same hotel, came up, Hunter acknowledged, “Exactly. Yeah, which was always in the forefront of my mind. I think I went more than anything because I was like, ‘hey, might as well go out with a bang.’”
Now sober, Hunter has been actively participating in a public relations tour, presenting himself as a reformed figure and engaging in discussions with a variety of public figures, ranging from Tucker Carlson and Bill Maher to Candace Owens, former CNN anchor Don Lemon, and YouTuber Andrew Callaghan.
In his 2021 memoir, “Beautiful Things,” Hunter also disclosed an incident where he mistakenly smoked parmesan cheese, thinking it was crack, during his time at the Chateau.
During his conversation on Dopey, Hunter expressed, “I was trying to commit suicide without having the courage to do it directly… who else does that other than somebody that knows that they want to?” He also mentioned still knowing the Chateau staff years later, emphasizing their kindness and how they protected him during his troubled times.
He revealed that he learned to cook crack at the Chateau and became adept at it. As his life spiraled further into darkness in LA, he survived on the “kindness” of various people from drug dealers to sex workers—individuals who didn’t immediately judge or insist on treatment or imprisonment.
When asked how he managed financially during these times, Hunter responded, “I never went broke… Well, I still had residual income. For instance, I was still on the board of Burisma,” noting his past roles on approximately “14 boards” of major national and international organizations, as well as a legal position at Boies Schiller.
He continued serving on the Burisma board, which he joined while his father was vice president, and for three years thereafter, managing to fulfill his board responsibilities by attending just four meetings a year, despite his addiction.
The Chateau Marmont declined to comment on the matter, and it was noted that Ukrainian energy company Burisma had been dissolved in 2023.
