Making homemade sushi without a kit is not only possible, but it’s also easier with this particular tool. Once you try this method, you won’t look back!

Tonight, it’s homemade sushi time!“, you declare proudly to your partner. “Do you know how to roll them?“, they ask worriedly. You’ve never actually tried it before, but how hard can it be? “I’ve got this under control,” you reassure them. After all, you just need to follow the steps on the kit, you reassure yourself as well. But minutes later, your sushi-making session turns into a culinary nightmare: one hand is sticky with rice and the other is stuck to the rolling mat, which absolutely refuses to cooperate with your rolling attempts. Avocado, salmon, all the ingredients start escaping from the roll. “Are these some kind of deconstructed sushi?“, your partner jokes. “Why don’t you give it a try, then!“, you retort. It’s time to put that sushi kit away because there’s a much easier way to do this, guaranteed without rolling and hassle-free!

When dietitian Zoé Vrignaud (known as @zoeladiet on Instagram) wants a quick, balanced meal, she makes homemade sushi. But here, she doesn’t use a kit. To assemble them without them falling apart, she has a well-practiced technique: she uses a baking dish trick.

She picks a rectangular dish and lines the entire bottom surface with a sheet of plastic wrap. She then lays down a first layer of salmon slices, followed by a layer of avocado slices. After that, she covers everything with sticky rice. She folds the plastic wrap over the top, presses down firmly, and chills it in the refrigerator. Once the preparation has cooled, she unmolds it by flipping the dish onto a clean cutting board.

She carefully removes the plastic wrap, sprinkles some sesame seeds on top, and then cuts the layered slab into small cubes with a knife. The sushi is ready to serve! Seaweed, cream cheese… with this layering system, you can add whatever elements you like to create your favorite sushi, she adds in her video. This will surely impress your partner!
