Brandy the dog endured several days trapped under debris without sustenance
A family from Virginia was devastated by the belief that their cherished dog, Brandy, had died following a catastrophic house explosion, only to experience a heartwarming reunion with the resilient pooch six days later.
Local CBS affiliate WUSA9 reported that the explosion, which took place on October 14 in Haymarket, Virginia, resulted in the displacement of two families. Megan Schnapp and her partner Joshua Jeffries, residents of the affected home, were outside at the time of the blast. Unfortunately, their dog Brandy was inside, leading them to fear the worst.
According to WTOP news, Brandy, a five-year-old dog, had been confined to the upstairs area while workers were repairing a water pipe in the house on the day of the incident.

The miraculous discovery happened on October 21, when an insurance inspector and Schnapp were surveying the damage. Hearing barking from within the ruins, Schnapp realized it was Brandy, who had somehow survived the explosion but was trapped in the aftermath. Schnapp immediately contacted the Prince William Professional Firefighters for assistance in rescuing her beloved pet.
Within 20 minutes, firefighters employing “stabilizing shoring techniques,” as reported by WTOP, and with some encouragement from Jeffries using slices of ham, Brandy managed to emerge from the debris on her own. Although initially shaken, Brandy quickly became ecstatic to be back with her owners.

Immediately following the rescue, Brandy was examined by a veterinarian. She sustained minor injuries, including cuts and burns, but was otherwise in good health. “Now our family is complete again,” Schnapp expressed her relief through WTOP.
On October 21, the Prince William Professional Firefighters shared on Facebook that Brandy is expected to make a full recovery from the ordeal.
Lt. Mark Waldrop of WUSA9 expressed surprise at Brandy’s survival, noting she had endured six days without food or water. He speculated that Brandy might have been shielded within a void space, which can occur in structural collapses, thus providing her with just enough livable conditions to survive.
“She was in surprisingly good shape and expressed her joy by wagging her tail vigorously,” assistant chief Matt Smolsky commented on the rescue to NBC Washington.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, but initial reports from NBC Washington suggest a private contractor may have accidentally struck and ruptured a gas line while working on a waterline in Brandy’s home.

Pets have remarkably survived in other perilous situations. For example, in April, a dog in Nebraska was lifted by a tornado while inside its crate and deposited four blocks away. Despite losing some nails and sustaining minor injuries, the dog was lucky to survive, a local rescue organization reported to KTMV.
