As children grow older and begin to question the existence of Santa Claus, here’s the best way to reveal the truth without upsetting them.

Allowing children to believe in Santa Claus can nurture their imagination and enhance the magic of childhood. This belief sparks their creativity, ability to dream, and experience moments of wonder. Through the anticipation and excitement of Christmas, they also learn patience and the concept of surprise. Some psychologists point out that this period of belief is not a deception, but rather a rite of passage that helps them perceive the world in a playful and joyful way. However, it’s equally important to respect each child’s individual pace: when questions about the truth arise, it is crucial to respond kindly and explain that Santa Claus is part of a wonderful tradition that grows with them.

Moreover, it is increasingly challenging for parents to keep the mystery of Santa Claus alive. Children talk a lot in school playgrounds and often, one of them ends up revealing the secret to the others. Through television and movies, they are encountering the truth earlier and sometimes in a harsh manner. Therefore, if you suspect that your child is starting to have doubts, it’s better to tell them the truth before they find out on their own, to avoid being seen as the dreadful lying parent.

Charity Hutchinson, an American mother, shared on her Facebook a heartwarming way to explain to her children that Santa Claus isn’t real. When her children started expressing doubts about his existence, she invited them to become Santa Claus themselves. “You’ve really grown a lot this year, not just physically, but in your heart as well. In fact, your heart is so big that I think you’re ready to be a Santa Claus! You’ve probably noticed that most Santas are just people in costumes, many kids say that because they’re not ready to BE a Santa Claus, but you are. […] I believe it’s time for you to accept YOUR first Santa mission!” she suggested. The mission would then be to secretly give a thoughtful gift to a friend or a young neighbor, without being seen or revealing the secret… because a true Santa gives not for thanks, but out of kindness.

By stepping into the role of the person they have admired throughout their life, children transition to a new stage. They now become old enough compared to their younger siblings, and the only ones in on the secret with mom and dad. It’s a privileged role they will proudly take on by wearing the Santa suit and placing gifts under the Christmas tree while everyone else is asleep…
