Saint Nicholas Day is a festive occasion in northeastern France and Belgium, dedicated to honoring the patron saint of children, often accompanied by Father Whipper. Here’s everything you need to know about this tradition and its two iconic figures.

Every December 6th, a deeply rooted tradition is celebrated in Lorraine and the northern parts of France: Saint Nicholas Day. In these regions, the day honors the patron saint of children and of Lorraine, a historical figure who truly existed. This symbolic date features numerous festivities. For instance, in Nancy, the city comes alive with a large parade featuring floats, mythical creatures, and iconic figures, including Saint Nicholas and the imposing Father Whipper alongside him. It’s an opportunity for both young and old to (re)discover the history and legends associated with Saint Nicholas Day.

Who is Saint Nicholas?

Saint Nicholas Day celebrates Nicholas of Myra, a 3rd-century bishop born in Patara, Lycia (now part of modern Turkey) in 270 and died on December 6, 345, in Myra. His early years indicated a promising future, born into a wealthy Christian family and gifted with almost miraculous abilities—the legend says he could stand up in his bath only days old. However, his life took a dramatic turn when his parents died from the plague. Deciding to devote himself to God, he became a priest and abbot, ordained by his uncle, the bishop of Myra, whose position he succeeded upon his uncle’s death. However, he didn’t escape persecution by Ancient Rome, and around 310, he was arrested and tortured. He chose to give away all his inherited wealth to the poor. To many, he is Saint Nicholas, the protector of children and the destitute. After his death, numerous miracles were attributed to him, and his generosity became well-recognized. He was canonized around 350.

In most Christian traditions, Saint Nicholas is revered. His cult is also significant in the Orthodox religion, where he is seen as a miracle worker. Over the years, in France, Central, and Western Europe, Saint Nicholas became a significant religious figure. He was declared the patron saint of Lorraine in 1477 after the Battle of Nancy, which saw the army of Duke René II of Lorraine, under the protection of Saint Nicholas and the Virgin Mary, defeat the forces of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. This battle established a special connection between Saint Nicholas and Lorraine.

Who is Father Whipper?

Father Whipper also plays a role during Saint Nicholas Day. He is a mysterious character, somewhat terrifying to those who encounter him. Also known as Krampus, Father Whipper is none other than Saint Nicholas’ sidekick, whose job is to punish children who have not behaved throughout the year. Typically, he is dressed in a long brown or black coat with a hood, and sports a long black beard. He always carries a whip or a bundle of dried branches, used to intimidate the younger children.

What is the Legend of Saint Nicholas?

The character of Saint Nicholas is surrounded by numerous miracles and legends likely rooted in the deeds he performed during his lifetime. The most famous legend in Lorraine tells of three young children who got lost one night. While wandering, they sought refuge with a malicious butcher, who chopped them up and put them in a salting tub to preserve them. Seven years later, by chance, Saint Nicholas encountered the butcher and asked to taste the prepared meat. Panicked, the butcher fled, and Saint Nicholas resurrected the three children. This legend helped spread the notion of Saint Nicholas as the protector of children.

Why Do We Celebrate Saint Nicholas Day?

In the east and north of France, Saint Nicholas Day is a festive day to honor the legendary figure of Saint Nicholas. On this day, Saint Nicholas walks the streets to reward children who have behaved well during the year. Celebrating Saint Nicholas Day thus allows the younger ones to receive little gifts before Christmas.

What is the Tradition on Saint Nicholas Day?

On Saint Nicholas Day, in the cities of Lorraine and Alsace, tradition dictates that a large parade be held. Dressed in his red and white bishop’s robes, with his staff and miter, Saint Nicholas hands out treats to well-behaved children (candies, gingerbread, chocolates, etc.). At his side, the menacing Father Whipper is present to punish the misbehaving children by giving them coal or onions. The tradition also encourages families to spend time in the kitchen, preparing man-shaped brioche, enjoyed with clementines and hot chocolate.

Who is Saint Nicholas Compared to Santa Claus?

Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus are two distinct figures: one existed, the other is a myth, yet they share some similarities. For some, Saint Nicholas inspired the creation of Santa Claus, just by his depiction (white beard, red coat, etc.). Both are also known for their generosity toward children. Moreover, in cities that uphold the tradition, the Saint Nicholas parade often kicks off the Christmas festivities.
