Ensuring Years of Peace of Mind
As we age, our priorities shift and new concerns arise. Health typically moves to the forefront, with a strong desire to maintain independence and stay healthy as long as possible to enjoy time with children and grandchildren. Managing personal finances and daily expenses also becomes more critical, as does the need to keep social connections to avoid loneliness. Then comes the daunting question of housing: should one stay at home or consider a more suitable living arrangement?

This concern affects practically everyone. Indeed, many retirees start thinking about this earlier and are often encouraged by their families to explore existing aids that can help them maintain their independence. For aging individuals, it’s wise to plan for everyday activities if they choose to continue living at home. Making home adjustments is thus a matter of safety as well as comfort. With well-thought-out modifications, an individual can preserve their independence and continue living in their home for as long as possible.
Today, one in five retirees has already undertaken home improvement projects in anticipation of their later years, according to a recent study by the CNAV (National Old Age Insurance Fund), conducted by the Crédoc (Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions) in January 2025. Pascal Dreyer, a research coordinator at Leroy Merlin Source, suggests that the best time to modify one’s home is “between the ages of 60-70” when individuals are still capable, both mentally and financially, of planning and executing these projects. “Around the age of 80, it becomes much more complicated. There’s fear of starting a big project, children often live far away, and it’s difficult to find an alternative elsewhere,” he reports to our colleagues at Le Figaro. Despite the challenges, the project is essential.
In France, there are several financial aids available for undertaking home modification projects. The Anah (National Agency for Housing) offers grants for certain installations like support bars and secure showers. MaPrimeAdapt’, launched in 2024 by the government, also finances up to 50% of modification work for seniors and those experiencing a loss of autonomy. Pension funds may also provide aid depending on an individual’s financial resources.
