At ages 101 and 99, they still share their story with a sense of humor and reveal the phrase they’ve used for decades to avoid many disputes.
Eight decades of matrimony are not just rare; they are almost unheard of. Amos Wright, often called Mose, and his wife Gloria, are among those couples who remain married and in love at the ages of 101 and 99, respectively. One might wonder: how do they continue to love, stay united, and tolerate each other after so many years? Their secret involves a simple yet timely repeated phrase.
Their journey was highlighted by the American television network KSL. The network detailed how Amos and Gloria first met in high school, started dating, and then tied the knot in 1945. Shortly after, Amos was deployed to Germany. Gloria followed him as part of one of the first groups of wives allowed to travel there. Their marriage began with challenges of distance and adjustment. A memorable moment for them was when Gloria, nervous about reuniting with her husband after many months, hid inside the train instead of disembarking. Amos had to go aboard to find her. This scene, still recounted with laughter by their family and friends, demonstrated early on that they face tough times together, hand in hand. The rest of their lives continued to be just as eventful.
The couple had five children, and with Amos’s military career, the family moved over 38 times, spanning the United States, Japan, and many years in Germany. Each move required packing up, switching schools, establishing new routines, and starting afresh elsewhere. Such a lifestyle usually puts a strain on relationships, but for the Wrights, it seemed to forge a strong team.
As reported by KSL, their relatives say that they still laugh together, speak gently to each other, and take care of one another daily. Gloria mentions that Amos remains her “sweetheart.” Amos himself talks about faith and love, but also humor. When asked about the secret to their long-lasting marriage, Amos consistently responds with a smile, “Always say ‘yes, dear.'” He believes that this phrase has been pivotal in sustaining their relationship through the years.
For other couples, it might be the 2-2-2 rule that helps keep their relationship strong and joyful. Ultimately, as the Wrights demonstrate after 80 years of marriage, a successful relationship is about sharing and kindness, not about obedience or suppression. It’s knowing when to let certain issues go, calming the situation, and not turning every disagreement into a battle.
