From returning packages to sending out mail, many still believe a trip to the post office is necessary. However, there’s a free solution that allows you to manage all your shipments from home.

Each year, millions of letters and packages move through the French postal network. Despite the rise of digital communication, some processes still require a physical dispatch. Whether it’s sending back a government form, returning a contract, or shipping back an online purchase that didn’t meet expectations, the usual approach is to prepare the shipment and then find time to drop it off at a post office. This long-standing habit, however, is not always necessary anymore.

For several years now, La Poste has offered a service that allows individuals to send certain items directly from their homes. This completely free service addresses a very practical issue: it eliminates the need to travel for what can sometimes be a time-consuming errand. For rural residents, the elderly, or simply those who do not wish to make an extra stop amid other appointments, this option is particularly beneficial.

The service in question involves shipping from one’s own mailbox. As stated on La Poste’s official website, after placing a pickup request, you just need to leave your mail or package in your mailbox. The postal worker collects it using a master key before forwarding it to its destination. Once the postage is paid, there are no additional charges for the collection. The postal worker simply picks up the mail during their regular rounds.

However, not everyone can automatically take advantage of this service. In order for the postal worker to collect the items, the mailbox must meet certain standards. It needs to be a “standardized” mailbox, meaning it must measure at least 26 centimeters by 26 centimeters by 34 centimeters. The 34 centimeters can be the width, height, or depth. Importantly, it must have a system that allows the postal worker to open it with their professional key. This is what allows them to access its contents even when no one is at home.

If you are installing a mailbox at your own expense in a detached home, expect to spend about forty euros by purchasing one from stores like Leroy Merlin or Bricomarché. In newer apartment buildings, standardized mailbox units are standard. In older buildings, however, a check might be necessary. If needed, you can request that your homeowner’s association bring the mailboxes up to standard.
