Glasses have now become a full-fledged fashion accessory, no longer hidden away but instead enhanced by hairstyles. Here are some tips to pick the perfect hairstyle that complements your glasses.

Don’t feel limited in your hairstyle choices just because you wear glasses! It’s important to choose a hairstyle that complements both your face shape and your glasses. “It’s all about the proportions of the neck, cheeks, haircut, and the shape of the glasses,” says Delphine Courteille, a hair stylist with L’Oréal Professionnel. “Then, adapt the haircut accordingly to balance the face shape, which, of course, you can’t change.”

Considering Face Shape

For example, those with round faces should aim to add length and volume, perhaps with a long bob or curly hair, and avoid very short, sleek bobs with round glasses that would further emphasize the roundness of their features.

Conversely, individuals with long faces should look to increase roundness to balance out their natural length, perhaps with a bowl cut to offset hollow cheeks, a pixie cut, or a trendy 90s bob cut just below the ears. However, you should avoid wearing your hair too long with a middle part and large, 70s-style glasses, as this combination only elongates your features further.

Matching Glasses Shape

In keeping with the theme of proportions, the hairstyles you choose should also complement the shape of your glasses. While it’s important to pick frames that you like and that match your style, you should style your hair in a way that highlights them.

For instance, the retro look of cat-eye glasses works well with rounded faces and can be paired with a stylish updo like a beehive. With thick-framed glasses, which are very popular, make sure to open up the face with a high ponytail, a low bun, or even a bold pixie cut.

As for colored glasses, they are perfect for drawing attention and can help distract from a pronounced chin.

Common Styling Mistakes to Avoid

While bangs can definitely be worn with glasses, avoid overly long bangs that can overwhelm the face. “Opt for shorter bangs in the front and slightly longer on the sides, à la Jeanne Damas,” Delphine Courteille advises. “It works very well with glasses.”

Also, avoid too much volume in your hairstyle, especially if you have curly hair, and instead go for lovely waves that won’t overpower your look.

Even if you only wear your glasses occasionally, don’t forget to bring them along when you visit the hairdresser, so they can tailor the cut to suit your frames.
