What’s the Best Haircut at 60?
Let’s dispel the myths: turning 60 doesn’t mean you have to chop off your hair! “It all depends on your hair thickness,” says Delphine Courteille, a hair stylist at L’Oréal Professionnel. “Unfortunately, as we age, we tend to lose a lot of thickness due to the decrease in keratin within the hair fiber, making the hair fluffier. In such cases, opting for a bob cut, like a trendy 90s bob, is advisable. If your hair remains high-quality, you can afford to keep it longer – up to mid-length that falls to the shoulder blades – and even consider a nice layered look.“
And what about bangs? “They’re not necessarily off-limits,” indicates Delphine Courteille. The stylist will need to adapt to the shape of your face and any glasses you might wear, as well as to your expression lines. However, avoid thick bangs that might overly cover your face. Regarding color, remember it’s better to lighten it by a half-tone: “It will make maintenance easier and help soften features that tend to harden over time,” Courteille adds.
Choosing Hairstyles at 60 When Wearing Glasses
Whether you wear them all the time or just for reading, glasses are a part of your daily life and should influence your hairstyle choice based on their shape and style. “It’s all about the proportion between the neck, cheeks, haircut, and glasses shape,” Delphine Courteille elaborates. “You’ll then need to adjust the haircut accordingly to always balance out your face shape, which, unlike hair, you cannot change.“
For round faces, aim for length and volume with sharply angled glasses. Oval faces, which are longer, look best with hairstyles and glasses that add roundness, like a wavy bob, also highly recommended for thin hair.
How to Enhance Your Salt-and-Pepper Hair
Just look at advertisements and fashion shows: models over 60 are trending and proudly show off their gray and even white hair! To embrace it as beautifully as Sophie Fontanel and Tatiana de Rosnay, whom Delphine Courteille also styles, and maintain it regularly, it’s easy: “If it tends to yellow, use a purple shampoo about once a week,” Courteille advises. “If your hair becomes very dull, schedule an appointment with your colorist for a clear treatment, akin to a top coat for nails, that will bring back some shine. They might also tone the hair to a vanilla color if it gets too silvery.“
Having salt-and-pepper hair doesn’t mean you should stop visiting your hairstylist! They can offer numerous tips to counteract yellowing and enhance the shine, while again tailoring to the quality of your hair.
