As a degree alone no longer guarantees a job, recent high school graduates are eager to know which academic paths lead to employment. Here’s a list of French universities and schools ranked by their job placement rates for students at the end of their programs.

High school seniors facing the daunting Parcoursup system (or those familiar with its predecessor, Admission Post-Bac) understand all too well that choosing a career path is anything but straightforward. Unless they have a clear calling, many young people struggle with this significant decision that will largely shape their professional future. A critical factor in this decision-making process is the potential job prospects following graduation.

In an era where a diploma alone does not ensure job security post-graduation, it is crucial for prospective students to identify programs that offer the highest likelihood of employment. To assist in this, we have compiled a ranking of French universities and schools based on their students’ employment rates across various disciplines, six months to a year after graduation.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Higher Education regarding the class of 2024, a military school has achieved the highest employment rate. The Air and Space School in Salon-de-Provence boasts an impressive 98.65% of its students securing jobs within six months post-graduation, reaching 100% after a year. This institution, which trains air force officers, is followed closely by two other prestigious military schools: the Naval School and the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr, both located in Brittany. They train officers for the National Navy and the Army, respectively, and report employment rates over 98%.

Ranking of Higher Education Institutions by Employment Rate:

Meteorology graduates are also experiencing high demand: The National School of Meteorology, a public institution in Toulouse, ranks fourth. It is the sole engineering school offering specialized programs in meteorology, forecasting, climatology, and atmospheric science research. More than 90% of its graduates find employment within a year of finishing their studies. Following in the top 10 are two engineering schools, a Conservatory of Music and Dance, a veterinary medicine school, an art and design school, and a school specializing in foundry and forge work. The next five positions are occupied by engineering schools: the Institute of Agro, the Higher School of Wood, two schools from the ENSAE-ENSAI group, the AGRIVIA Union, and the Institute of Textiles and Chemistry. The highest-ranked business school, the ESCCI (Higher School of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Normandy Gates), is 16th in the list.

Contrary to expectations, renowned institutions like Sciences Po do not fare as well in this ranking: the Lyon campus is at the 183rd place with only 65% of its graduates employed after a year, while the Paris campus ranks 281st with a mere 42% employment rate. Similarly, the prestigious École Polytechnique does not exceed 58% employment, placing it 233rd. At the very bottom of the list is the University of French Polynesia in Tahiti, where only 7.46% of graduates secure employment within six months, a figure that drops to under 6% after a year.

It’s important to note that this ranking is not comprehensive. The Ministry of Higher Education excludes programs with fewer than 20 graduates and bases its figures on a survey, which not all institutions fully respond to, explaining their absence from the list. The ministry notes that the “usable response rate hovers around 70%.” However, this overview provides valuable insights for prospective students, offering a realistic view of the job opportunities each French university can provide, thus helping them navigate the complex world of Parcoursup and career planning more confidently.
