UK Country artist, Jaz Connell has released a brand-new single today (16th August) titled ‘Your Girl’. The new track blends the sounds of Americana with tonal country-pop, creating a delightfully melodic track which is further enhanced by Jaz’s great songwriting.
Jaz is definitely becoming an artist to watch on the UK country music scene and caught the eye of Belles and Gals from the release of her debut single ‘Footsteps’ and her new release continues to lead her on a path to stardom. We were lucky enough to discuss the new single with Jaz which you can find more about below.
Hi Jaz, to start with how would you explain your sound to those who have not listened to your music before?
Hello, thank you for interviewing me! First of all, I’d say it’s a new wave of Americana blended with new and old country. Sonically the sound is hazy and warm – lyrically it’s me showcasing experiences I’ve had growing up as a girl and instrumental wise, it’s spacious. I think it’s an obvious thing to say ‘make music you’d listen to’ but I genuinely do – my music is for just kicking back and relaxing or driving at golden hour with the windows down. I also aspire to write songs which others can relate to, I’d like to think myself as a voice for young ladies, yeehaw! Haha.
Where do you draw influences from for your music and does your life experiences reflect in your songwriting?
My influences are drawn from legendary artists like Johnny Cash, John Prine, Emmy Lou Harris and the Beatles to new artists like Kacey Musgraves, Midland and Jason Isbel. I used to write from my family and friends perspective – I remember being too scared to write from my own and worried about what others would think. However, in 2017 I found myself in all these life experiences and said to myself “yanno what, I’ve just gotta do it. . . “ Being a girl growing up can be crazy and I felt like there wasn’t a lot of songs speaking out from a late teens perspective. We make so many mistakes, we can’t all be perfect and that’s where i find great peace with my writing.
Your new track is titled ‘Your Girl’ tell us a little about how you came to write the song and your aim for the track.
Haha, sure! So, a guy I was seeing (but not really seeing) at the time texted me “Happy Valentine’s Day” and I was like “wait, we haven’t even spoke in ages and so, wth?!” So, I was confused like, “why’d ya say that?” And the response I got was “cos you’re my girl” and in the instant something in my brain just screamed like OMG NEW SONG and I thought wth, I’m not your girl – pen was on paper within seconds. But in all honesty. It really contrasts with my first single Footsteps and shows how much I have matured with my sound, image and outlook as an artist. I hope listeners will hear that and continue with me on this super fascinating journey that loves to throw curveballs and we can all just sit and relate to what life is!
The aim is for listeners to feel like they can relate and think ‘HELL YEAH’ just for themselves. It’s kinda a low key just love yourself before even worrying about anyone else kinda song. Like I say, I want to help girls realise that they can make mistakes in life but to be sure to learn and grow from their experiences -it’ll only make em’ stronger!
When can we expect even more great new music from you?
Yanno, first thing you should know about me is I don’t like to rush – patience is absolutely everything. Everything has its reason and place and I think whatever feels natural for me goes ahead. I have so many songs that I just can’t wait to get out – so it’s just about keeping a look out on socials or my website.
Finally, where can people find out more about you and your music?
Yay – I’m excited to see what’s in store for the future. Thank you so much for having me! I am constantly on Instagram, so any news will always be posted there before anywhere else.
