According to the latest edition of “The Official Guide to First Names 2027” (First Editions), this year the “TV show effect” is a major trend for girls’ names, elevating names like Esmée, Alba, and Arya to the top of the birth charts.
The new release of The Official Guide to First Names 2027 hits shelves this Thursday, September 10. This eagerly anticipated book reveals the major naming trends for the upcoming years. For girls, it appears that parents are significantly influenced by the television shows they watch on streaming platforms. “Some names that are trending in France are also those of characters from popular TV series. This is a significant influence on the mindset of young parents,” shares Stéphanie Rapoport, author of the guide, in an interview with Le Parisien.
This phenomenon she describes as the “TV show effect” sees parents opting for names that are modern, poetic, and full of character, identifying with the journeys of memorable characters. Thus, the name Esmée, which was previously seen as rather classic, has surged in popularity, driven by the bold and independent character Esmée Shelby in the series Peaky Blinders (and also from the Twilight saga). Similarly, Arya remains highly favored in tribute to the fearless heroine from Game of Thrones, while Alba tops the trend list, boosted by the success of notable actresses and characters from both Spanish and international television, including “The Telephone Girls,” but also noteworthy is actress Alba Flores from Money Heist.

Beyond the fascination with television fiction, the 2027 edition also confirms other major trends. Additionally, the resurgence of retro and botanical names (Rose, Agathe, Iris) once again highlights the trend of nature-inspired names.
