By 2025, these two female names will top the list: “the race for first place is so tight that it’s difficult to determine a clear winner,” according to the Official Names 2025 guide (First editions). Here is the top 20 list of names for girls.
Popular female names for the year 2025 have just been announced. Each year, the Official Names 2025, published by First editions, ranks the most fashionable names for girls. Last year, the name Alba reached the top spot, but this year it has been overtaken by two other names, tied for first place: Ambre and Louise. “The competition for the top spot is so close that it’s hard to pick a definitive winner,” say the authors of the book released this September 5, 2024. “With just a few more births, Ambre could become the top female name in France while Louise, the queen of the year 2015, dreams of reclaiming the throne,” they add.
The name Ambre is also influenced by the trend of names derived from nature, such as Agathe and Jade for gemstones, and Iris and Rose for flowers. Names starting with ‘A’ are particularly trendy this year, as six of the top 20 female names begin with the first letter of the alphabet: Ambre, Alba, Alma, Alice, Anna, and Agathe, making up a quarter of the top 20!
As for the name Alba, which was in first place last year, it remains in the third spot for 2025. Popularized by the character from the Spanish series “The Young Ladies of the Telephone” and by Alba Flores in “La Casa de Papel,” this name “ticks all the boxes,” according to author Stéphanie Rapoport: it’s short and ends with an ‘A,’ while also referencing nature as it means “Dawn” in Spanish. These are all criteria sought after by young parents. Here is the list of trendy female names for 2025:
