A specific detail can give away a man who pretends to be (still) in love, even if everything else suggests the opposite.

In any romantic relationship, words don’t always tell the full story. Some people know exactly when to be there, how to put in effort when needed, or offer reassuring words without truly being emotionally invested. On Instagram, personal coach Guillaume Bellow-Magnier has explored behaviors that can reveal a lack of romantic feelings despite appearances. According to him, there are several recurring signs among men who pretend to be committed to a relationship.

The first sign to be wary of is communication. In a relationship, disagreements and hurts are nearly inevitable, but dialogue helps the relationship progress. When a man is not in love, according to Guillaume Bellow-Magnier, “he is fully aware that he’s hurting you”. In such cases, the coach continues, trying to discuss it usually changes nothing because “he already knew it“. When faced with complaints, “he will either make excuses or outright blame you for being responsible“. But he won’t seek to communicate in a way that positively advances the relationship.

Another behavior to note, says the expert, is “It doesn’t bother him at all not to talk to you for several days”. While everyone needs some personal time, especially with work, friends, family, or daily obligations, it’s concerning when this absence doesn’t create any sense of missing or concern. Essentially, “he is happy with the ‘peace’ he has“, the coach summarizes, and “it doesn’t particularly worry him to think that other men might be more attentive to you while he’s away“.

The third most telling sign often creates the most confusion: “You don’t know whether you should leave or keep hoping”, Guillaume Bellow-Magnier points out. According to him, “this is the classic proof that he neglects you, but does just enough to not lose you“. This uncertainty arises when the man alternates between periods of distance and moments of attention. He might be less present, less involved, or less affectionate for a while, then suddenly changes his behavior as soon as he senses his partner pulling away. He becomes a bit more tender, a bit more available, or a bit more expressive—just enough to reboot the relationship, but not enough to truly evolve it. The couple isn’t deeply in love anymore.

For the coach, if a man becomes attentive only when he risks losing his partner, “it shows that he knows exactly what he needs to do to make you happy, but he consciously chooses not to do it“. This maintains the feeling of being stuck between two decisions, never knowing which path to take. When a relationship is based on these constant doubts, it strongly suggests that a man is not genuinely invested in the relationship.
