This new policy could be a game-changer for cyclists struggling with urban navigation.
Biking through city streets can often feel like navigating an obstacle course. Cyclists must constantly adjust to traffic rules, interactions with motorists, and ever-changing urban layouts. One of the trickiest maneuvers, making a left turn, remains a significant challenge. Typically, to turn left, cyclists need to position themselves in the center of the road, cross opposing traffic lanes, and merge into the flow of vehicles—a risky move that puts them directly in the path of motorized traffic.
In response to this issue, a groundbreaking trial has been initiated regarding the practice of the ‘indirect left turn’ for cyclists, as announced by the Road Safety Authority in a press release. This new method offers cyclists a safer alternative for executing this maneuver, utilizing specially designed signage and unique road markings. Instead of crossing traffic head-on, cyclists can first move to a designated biking box on the right-hand street, then cross the intersection straight through at the next green light. Details of the trial were outlined in a decree published on September 4.
The aim is to streamline traffic flow while enhancing the safety of cyclists during their urban journeys. This trial will be conducted in four pioneering communities over 36 months: Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, and Nantes, selected for their high density of cycling traffic and commitment to promoting sustainable mobility. The new rule will be specifically tested in Strasbourg, Nantes Métropole, in the Hauts-de-Seine departmental council at Bourg-la-Reine, and the Val-de-Marne departmental council in the towns of Cachan and Villejuif.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the Road Code and adapt to new mobility practices. The results from these four pilot cities could potentially lead to a nationwide adoption of this measure. For cyclists in these areas, it will be crucial to familiarize themselves with the new signs and understand the accompanying rules!
