Believe It or Not, This Everyday Item Is Dirtier Than Your Computer Screen

There’s a high chance you’ve handled this item today—picked it up on your way out, placed it next to your morning coffee, or tossed it into your bag. It’s a constant companion, yet it’s likely that you seldom, if ever, clean it. Recent research has revealed that it harbors up to four times more bacteria than a phone screen.

The British website Money Supermarket conducted a study to measure the bacterial content on various everyday items. They surveyed 2,000 drivers and analyzed numerous objects that we come in contact with daily—from toilet seats to smartphone screens. The findings were quite revealing. For instance, a computer keyboard typically has a bacteria index of 68, while a phone has 66. Toilet seats, however, top the charts with a stunning 1,100.

Then there’s this particular item, often kept in a pocket or a purse, left lying on counters, and handled throughout the day. Its bacteria score? A whopping 241, nearly four times that of a touchscreen. Experts are sounding the alarm: it’s not just unclean, but potentially hazardous. Dr. Joe Latimer, a microbiologist and director at Microbe Consulting Ltd, notes that while most bacteria found on car keys pose no immediate threat, some can lead to infections, especially in hospital settings. He points out Staphylococcus epidermidis, a microbe usually harmless on the skin but dangerous if it enters the body, such as during surgery.

Adding to the concern, researchers have also found intestinal bacteria on this item. Since it’s rarely cleaned and never disinfected, it accumulates a small, invisible ecosystem. Experts recommend regular cleaning with a soft, damp cloth and some soap to mitigate risks. However, they advise against using bleach, which could damage internal components.
