Running Out of Battery at Inconvenient Times

It happens to everyone—your phone battery dies at the worst possible moment. Whether you’re about to send an important text to let someone know you’re running late or you need directions in an unfamiliar neighborhood, a dead battery can be a major inconvenience. It’s usually at these times that we realize we’ve forgotten our charger. In a pinch, many of us might ask a stranger or a local café if we could plug in our phone for just a few minutes.
Cybersecurity Experts Warn Against Public Charging
However, cybersecurity experts strongly advise against this practice. “Imagine you’re traveling and realize you forgot your underwear. You wouldn’t ask other travelers if you could borrow theirs; you’d go to a store and buy new ones,” says Charles Henderson, a global head at a cybersecurity firm. This analogy highlights the risks of sharing or borrowing charging equipment from others.
At times, you might find a charging cable at a public charging station and think it’s your lucky day. But beware—it could be a trap known as “Juice Jacking.” This technique involves using USB ports to install malware on unsuspecting users’ devices. This kind of attack can be as dangerous as sharing your password. “With the right malware, attackers can remotely hijack devices connected to these tampered cables,” security professionals explain.
These malicious cables, which can cost between $30 and $200 online, might enable hackers to access and transfer photos from your phone to another computer. More alarmingly, once the phone is connected, a hacker can monitor all activity on the device including stealing passwords, text messages, and contact lists. It’s crucial to use your own charging cable and to avoid trusting unfamiliar accessories, as it’s often very difficult to tell genuine cables from compromised ones.
