David Archuleta, known from “American Idol,” finds books that prompt personal reflection particularly appealing.
“I am drawn to books that encourage me to ponder my life, inspire introspection, and motivate me to seek purpose,” shares Archuleta, whose recent book “Devout” has just been released.
The artist behind “Crush” prefers a cozy nook on his couch as his favorite reading spot.
“…Or perhaps outdoors, like in a park or at the beach,” he adds.
Below are six books Archuleta highly recommends.
“Devout” by David Archuleta
“In my writing, I strive to be genuine, observant, introspective, and optimistic. These qualities were important to maintain in my narrative, which is why, after spending three years on it, I’ve included it in my list,” he explains.
“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho
“This is definitely my favorite book. It’s concise, and Coelho’s storytelling captivates you, which is perfect for someone like me who gets easily distracted. I adore the sense of wonder, adventure, and self-discovery it evokes, as well as its exploration of the world,” he says.
“Veronika Decides to Die” by Paulo Coelho
“Another gem by Coelho. I’m tempted to add more of his works to my list since he’s a favorite of mine. His storytelling immerses you in the narrative, sparking curiosity and addressing serious themes such as mental health, which I find very relatable. It also explores struggles with intimacy, a topic I touch on in my own book,” Archuleta explains.
“The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller
“This book was a recent discovery, gifted to me by a friend. I was captivated by its mythological backdrop and the profound relationship it portrays. It’s the kind of romantic dynamic that fills my daydreams,” he shares.
“I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy
“McCurdy’s frank and honest narrative resonated deeply with me. Our shared experiences with a controlling parent and a Mormon upbringing, alongside the journey to finding our own voices, made her book especially poignant. Jennette even encouraged me to write my book and helped connect me with her publishing team. Her influence has been profound and multifaceted,” he notes.
“The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz
“This book is a quick read but packed with practical wisdom. Given my tendency to forget details, it’s fortunate that it’s such an accessible book, allowing me to revisit its advice regularly without feeling overwhelmed,” he says.
