What if the key to lasting weight loss isn’t found in a diet plan or the latest exercise craze? At least, that’s what a sports medicine doctor is claiming.
When it comes to slimming down, advice often scatters in all directions. Some swear by cardio, others by weight training, and yet others by strict regimens. However, a 2026 study published in BMJ Medicine offers a different perspective. The researchers looked into what people actually do in their daily lives, not just focusing on one type of exercise. Their goal: to understand what helps people maintain their efforts over time, a crucial factor when trying to lose weight and keep it off.
On the ground, sports physician Jordan Metzl notices the same thing. The challenge isn’t starting; it’s continuing. Many give up because their routine becomes too monotonous or too demanding. When boredom sets in, motivation drops, and so do the results. Conversely, maintaining even a minimal level of enjoyment helps to keep a regular routine, a vital component for sustained weight loss.
He also observes that changing how activities are performed can entirely alter the effort involved. During a class in Central Park, he introduced an exercise involving keeping balloons in the air while in a crab position. “People were frazzled trying to maintain the stance,” he recalls. Without aiming to “do it right,” participants lasted longer than expected. This type of experience demonstrates that we can do more simply because the activity is different and more engaging.
What the data shows is that individuals who avoid locking themselves into a single routine manage to stay consistent over time. This is the crucial point. “The Holy Grail of fitness is consistency, and the Holy Grail of consistency is enjoyment,” Jordan Metzl summarizes. Clearly, to remain diligent, the most tangible solution is to vary your activities.
In everyday life, this involves very simple adjustments. Some people rely on online classes to move at home, while others incorporate more physical activity into their routines, like walking more often. It could also be gardening or even jogging with a stroller. Another trick mentioned by Jordan Metzl involves a patient who left his sports shoes at the gym, forcing him to go there to retrieve them. The result? He ended up exercising almost every time.
