Parenting is often likened to running a marathon. Between daily duties and endless surprises, the stress can become overwhelming. However, recent research has shown that over half of the parents who adopted a specific approach were more relaxed and fulfilled than their peers. And no, it’s not about enrolling in yet another self-improvement workshop or overhauling your entire schedule. It’s much simpler than that.
The study highlighted that planning, far from being exhausting, can actually be a powerful tool for enhancing well-being. But what exactly should one plan? It’s not about organizing a birthday party, booking a table at a restaurant, or planning a shopping trip. Rather, the idea is to anticipate an event that will provide a fresh breath of air to your everyday routine.
Research has shown that the human brain operates in such a way that the anticipation of a future enjoyable moment boosts dopamine, the pleasure hormone, while reducing cortisol, the stress hormone. Looking forward to a relaxing break, even if it’s in the distant future, thus helps to ease tension, lighten the daily load, and provide perspective. It acts as a natural antidote to anxiety. Indeed, according to a study commissioned by Carnival Cruise Line, more than half of Australian parents (51%) report that booking holidays months in advance makes them feel like better parents.
The findings also reveal that two-thirds of Australians (66%) have more fun during their trips when they book in advance. Clearly, the simple act of envisioning and discussing an upcoming event injects a new dynamic into the household, bringing lightness and energy. It strengthens family bonds and adds meaning to what can sometimes be monotonous days. Finally, researchers have found that families who anticipate such experiences live more harmoniously, argue less, and face daily challenges with greater resilience. It’s an approach that truly benefits everyone!
