When a child suffers from a serious illness, disability, or has been in a severe accident, it sometimes becomes necessary for a parent to stop working. The parental presence allowance provides financial support to help families manage during these challenging times.
When a child is afflicted by a severe illness, disability, or serious accident, they often require intensive care and the constant presence of a parent. The Daily Parental Presence Allowance (AJPP) is available to provide financial assistance to families, allowing them to stay with their child without completely losing their income. This financial aid compensates for missed work days within certain limits.
What is the amount of the allowance?
The Daily Parental Presence Allowance is a fixed amount regardless of the parents’ income. From January 1st to December 31st, 2025, it is set at 32.90 euros for a half-day and 65.80 euros for a full day. Depending on the health condition of your child, an additional monthly supplement of 128.34 euros is provided, especially if the situation incurs expenses (not reimbursed by Social Security or your health insurance). It’s important to note that the allowance can be received by both parents simultaneously or alternately.
What is the duration of the allowance?
The AJPP is paid for a maximum of 310 days over a period of three years, with a limit of 22 days per month. This applies per child and per medical condition. Additionally, if approved by the Health Insurance, parents can receive it during renewable periods of six to twelve months.
What are the eligibility criteria?
To qualify for the AJPP, you must interrupt or reduce your work to care for your child. This aid is available to employees on parental presence leave, as well as to self-employed individuals, compensated job seekers, home workers, and those in paid training.
The grant of the AJPP also primarily depends on the health condition of the child. A doctor must issue a medical certificate detailing the severity of the condition, the need for constant parental presence, and the anticipated duration of the care. This document must be sent to your health insurance fund in a confidential envelope. The application is then reviewed by the medical service of the Health Insurance. The child must be under 20 years of age, be dependent on you, and not receive other family benefits (such as housing aid).
How do you take parental presence leave?
If you wish to take a parental presence leave, you must notify your employer at least 15 days before the start. This should be done by registered letter or handed in person against receipt. Attach a medical certificate that confirms the severity of your child’s condition and the necessity of your presence. For each day of absence, you must then notify your employer 48 hours in advance. If the leave needs to be extended beyond the period indicated in the medical certificate, the procedure remains the same as for the initial request. At the end of the leave, you have the right to return to your position or an equivalent job with the same salary.
What steps must be taken to obtain the AJPP?
To receive the Daily Parental Presence Allowance, you first need to request a parental presence leave from your employer. Then, with your child’s doctor, complete the Cerfa form n°12666*03 and attach a medical certificate. Send everything to your Family Allowance Fund, attention to the medical control service. Remember to include, if necessary, documents related to a change in situation (birth, marriage, etc.).
