Considering Quitting Alcohol? Here’s What It Could Do for Your Skin

If you’ve ever thought about taking a break from drinking or quitting alcohol altogether, your skin might just show you some positive changes in return.

According to the French Observatory for Drugs and Addiction Trends, “Daily alcohol consumption is declining among French people. This decline is even more significant among 17-year-olds for regular alcohol use.” Clearly, sobriety is becoming more popular, and rightfully so. The World Health Organization continues to highlight various health risks associated with alcohol consumption.

So, if you decide to stop drinking alcohol, even for a short period, you will likely notice the benefits almost immediately. Regular alcohol consumption can harm not only your organs but also your skin. Although “scientists are still researching the biological effects of alcohol on the body and skin, more and more recent studies show that the less you drink, the better off you are,” states Melanie Palm, a board-certified dermatologist, in Women’sHealth magazine. Here’s what you might see if you decide to cut out alcohol: “The first thing you’ll notice about your skin after you stop drinking is better hydration,” says Dr. Anetta Reszko, a dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon. “Your skin will appear (and be) plumper, as alcohol no longer drives water out of your body. You’ll also see a decrease in puffiness, typically due to alcohol affecting the lymphatic system,” adds Dr. Palm. After two to four weeks of sobriety, most people will begin to see a general decrease in inflammation and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. After a few months, “dilated blood vessels and chronic redness begin to fade,” notes Dr. Reszko. After one year, you will notice a significant improvement in the elasticity and overall quality of your skin.

Quitting alcohol, even temporarily, can give your skin a real boost. Brighter, less prone to redness, better hydrated, and overall healthier, your skin will quickly reflect this inner change.
