The Magic of Fireworks and the Challenge for Pets
Fireworks are a staple of celebrations such as New Year’s Eve, Independence Day, and other significant events, captivating audiences of all ages with their brilliant displays of light and sound. However, what is a delightful spectacle for humans can be a tremendous source of stress for our pets.

Dogs, in particular, are equipped with hearing that is four times more sensitive than that of humans. This heightened sense allows them to hear sounds that we cannot, making loud noises like fireworks not just startling but intensely overwhelming. Such experiences can be distressing or even terrifying for them, leading to behaviors like hiding under tables or beds, ears pinned back, and a visibly scared demeanor. Fortunately, there are ways to help acclimatize them to these loud events gradually.
Training Tips from a Professional
Charles Steward, a dog trainer popularly known as Bulldog Bob on social media, shared a valuable technique in a Facebook video aimed at helping dogs overcome their fear of fireworks. He suggests playing YouTube videos of fireworks for the dogs weeks or even months before an actual event. Starting with a low volume and gradually increasing it allows the dogs to get used to the sounds. “I used my two dogs as examples to demonstrate ways to overcome anxiety and fear of fireworks. You should start doing this several months in advance. Gradually build their confidence so that if they are outside doing their business when fireworks start, they won’t be terrified,” explained the British trainer.
Steward demonstrated the effectiveness of his method by filming his two bulldogs sleeping peacefully while a fireworks video played loudly in the background, showing them calm and undisturbed. He also noted that this technique could be beneficial for young children who are similarly fearful of loud noises. In his video, a baby only a few months old can be seen watching the fireworks display on a couch, completely unfazed.
These insights not only provide a practical solution for pet owners but also highlight the importance of understanding and addressing the unique challenges that fireworks and similar loud events pose to sensitive listeners like pets and young children. By taking proactive steps, it’s possible to reduce their anxiety and help them enjoy these occasions with less stress.
