This perspective is appealing because it promises fewer rules, fewer calculations, and less visible constraints. However, when you move away from catchy phrases and examine what nutrition science says, the picture becomes more complex. The concept of intermittent fasting isn’t magical, and its effects depend on very specific factors that many prefer to overlook.

In a recent video posted on Instagram, Jean-Michel Cohen points out that in terms of weight loss strictly, intermittent fasting doesn’t outperform traditional dietary approaches. “What’s the benefit in terms of weight loss? Actually, intermittent fasting yields results quite similar to a Mediterranean diet with the same calorie intake.” In other words, with equal energy input, the outcomes are similar. So, fasting isn’t inventing anything revolutionary; it primarily alters how meals are organized. This detail is crucial because it challenges the notion that merely abstaining from food for several hours automatically triggers significant weight loss.

Where intermittent fasting gains an advantage, according to the nutritionist, is in other areas. Eliminating a meal changes the logistics, reduces the number of dietary decisions, and limits some repeated stimuli. “Simply omitting a meal makes it easier to start a diet,” he emphasizes. This can help some people sustain their efforts over time, especially those who quickly feel overwhelmed by traditional nutritional rules. But Jean-Michel Cohen clarifies: “It doesn’t make it easier, it makes it simpler to implement.” In other words, the method doesn’t eliminate the need to consider what you eat or the composition of the remaining meals.

This is precisely where many go wrong. The media success of intermittent fasting has established the idea that it works independently, as if the body naturally compensates for the rest. The expert asserts: “People who are convinced that intermittent fasting alone is enough are mistaken. Intermittent fasting is not sufficient by itself.” Indeed, it remains essential to monitor calorie intake when eating outside of fasting periods. Otherwise, skipping a meal has no benefit concerning weight loss.

An important reminder since it explains why some individuals see no results despite apparent discipline with timing. Fasting can be a tool, sometimes relevant, sometimes comfortable, but it only holds value if it is part of a coherent overall strategy.
