This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Your child’s entry into kindergarten is rapidly approaching, and you’re feeling anxious because they’re not yet toilet trained. Here are some tips to help.
In France, schooling becomes mandatory at the age of three, and children can attend either public or private institutions. But what if your child isn’t fully toilet trained when it’s time to start kindergarten? Here are some insights and advice from Héloïse Junier, a child psychologist and author of the Parent Survival Manual (Ed. Eyrolles).
Can a school refuse a child who isn’t toilet trained? What does the law say?
According to Article L113-1 of the education code, “every child should be welcomed into a kindergarten or nursery class as close to their home as possible at the age of three, if their family so requests”. In other words, being toilet trained is not a prerequisite for starting kindergarten. This was confirmed by Jean-Michel Blanquer, former Minister of Education, in response to a question from Senator Serge Babary, published in the JO Senate on 01/16/2020: “Toilet training is a joint effort between the school and the family. It should not be a condition that prevents a child from enrolling in and attending school. The ATSEM and the teacher are expected to perform the necessary hygiene tasks to help the child through this phase, respecting their maturity and privacy.”
Who changes diapers in kindergarten?
It is the territorial specialized school agents (ATSEM) who are responsible for changing diapers in kindergarten. Their role includes assisting the teacher with daily tasks such as welcoming, supervising, and managing the pupils.
Don’t rush the process or put pressure on yourselves
Mastering toilet training is a significant milestone in a child’s development. However, it would be counterproductive to rush this process. Héloïse Junier, a child psychologist, observes that parental pressure tends to increase in the summer and even from April. “It’s crucial for parents to release this pressure. The journey to becoming continent is not linear; it might take time or happen very quickly. Sometimes, just observing others and mimicking for one or two weeks is enough to motivate the child to use the toilet,” the expert reassures. Moreover, she suggests that the term ‘cleanliness’ is not appropriate as it implies that the child is unclean. “Parents should avoid having a negative image of their child as dirty. The more pressure put on the child, the more likely they are to reject the potty and potentially suffer from constipation,” warns the psychologist.
How can you help your child become toilet trained for school?
“If the child shows no interest in being continent, parents can start by stimulating their curiosity by reading books to them, leaving the bathroom door open, suggesting games about the topic, and discussing it. Some parents decorate the toilets or the area where the child goes to make it magical and enchanting,” advises Héloïse Junier. For toilet training to be successful, it’s essential for the child to be somewhat willing. “When they begin to recognize their internal signals (needing to pee or poop), that’s a good time to suggest they try going without a diaper,” she explains.
Another tip for familiarizing the child with the potty is to take it everywhere during vacations: on bike rides, to the beach, as if the potty is part of the family. As soon as the child shows signs of needing to go, the potty should be readily available. In the event of an accident, the parent should not humiliate the child, yell, or resort to physical punishment.
