The acclaimed actress, aged 47, took to Instagram on Friday, October 11, to announce that her cherished grandmother has been diagnosed with breast cancer. “My beautiful grandma Marilyn, who many of you have met at various events, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer,” Chastain shared.
“This week, I flew out to be with her fantastic medical team, meeting the doctors and surgeons who are giving her top-notch treatment,” continued the star of Mothers’ Instinct. “I am incredibly thankful for the exceptional care provided by the hospital staff.”
Chastain expressed her confidence in her grandmother’s resilience, adding, “She’s a total badass, and I know she’ll conquer this. .”
Emphasizing the Importance of Early Detection
In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Chastain relayed a message from her grandmother, urging everyone to prioritize their health. “In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she asked me to remind all of you: schedule your mammogram today,” the actress emphasized.
“You are so important to so many people—please make this a priority. #BreastCancerAwareness #GetChecked #EarlyDetection”
The Instagram update also included a video where Herst spoke about discovering a small lump during her annual check-up, which led to a prompt mammogram.
Now undergoing treatment for breast cancer, Herst expressed gratitude for the early detection. “I feel so fortunate that it was caught early because it’s so treatable,” she explained. “But if you don’t look after your health, get regular checks or mammograms, you might not catch it early which could be detrimental.”
“So I implore you to get checked. Please, do it for me,” Herst urged, with Chastain echoing, “For grandma! Please, go get your mammograms immediately.”
Chastain and Her Grandmother’s Close Bond
Chastain has a deep bond with her grandmother. According to The Wall Street Journal, during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, Herst moved in with Chastain.
The two spent significant quality time together, engaging in frequent workouts during the week.
Chastain recounted a humorous incident involving Herst during a January 2022 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “A few years ago, I hosted a party where Bradley Cooper was a guest. My grandmother, who’s at a point in her life where she does whatever she wants, decided to sit on Bradley’s lap,” Chastain shared.
“She just walked over to Bradley and sat down. He was quite shocked; he had never met her and had no idea who she was,” she continued. “I saw it unfolding and just started shouting, ‘It’s my grandma! It’s my grandma!’ Thankfully, he was cool about it and greeted her warmly,” added the Interstellar actress.
