In a recent interview with People, the artist behind “To Love Somebody” opened up about the severe effects of battling glioblastoma, a particularly deadly and aggressive brain cancer. The interview was published on Wednesday.
Bolton, aged 72, described the past year as a profound test of his inner strength and resilience. “It forces you to tap into your deepest reserves and resolve in ways you never imagined before,” he explained.
Staying Strong in the Face of Adversity
Bolton emphasized his determination, stating, “Giving in just isn’t an option. You find yourself quickly engaged in a battle. It’s in these moments you really discover your true mettle.”
The Grammy-winning artist expressed a hope that by sharing his journey, he could provide support and solidarity to others facing similar health battles. “Knowing you’re not alone when facing tough times can make a significant difference. It reassures people that they have support,” he noted.
Bolton has chosen not to seek a prognosis from his doctors, focusing instead on maintaining an optimistic outlook. His daily routine includes meditation, golf, personal training sessions, and both voice lessons and therapy.
“I generally find comfort more easily now. This whole ordeal has greatly increased my appreciation for life,” he shared. “It’s crucial to make the most of every moment. We develop new skills and ways to manage problems, and it’s essential to be your own biggest supporter.”
A Shift in Priorities
Bolton’s perspective on his legacy has evolved, shifting from his musical achievements to the well-being of his family. “I’m focused on passing on life lessons and love, ensuring my family feels validated and cherished,” he said. “Facing my mortality has illuminated new priorities and made me question if I’m truly making the most of my time.”
The singer, known for hits like “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” is motivated to persevere for his three adult daughters and six grandchildren.
Continuing the Fight
Bolton was first diagnosed with glioblastoma in December 2023 after emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor. A subsequent surgery in January 2024 addressed an infection, and he has undergone both radiation and chemotherapy as of last October.
Given the high recurrence rate of 90 percent associated with glioblastoma, his medical team monitors him closely with bi-monthly MRIs.
“There’s still so much fight left in me,” Bolton affirmed. “I’ve even come up with a song title: ‘Ain’t Going Down Without a Fight.'”
