Every year, forgetting just one tax deadline can be costly: tax filings, refunds… Here are the crucial dates to remember.

No one wants to receive a letter from the tax authorities or pay a penalty for a late payment. Yet, this happens more often than one might think: tax returns sent too late, unreported moves or changes in circumstances, rejected direct debits… Every year, taxpayers find themselves penalized for not keeping up with the tax calendar. Generally, the dates are similar from year to year, or at least, they occur around the same period.

This year, the tax calendar has been somewhat disrupted due to the late adoption of the Finance Law of 2025. The tax administration is set to officially unveil it on April 10th – the opening day of the 2025 tax campaign and the online filing service for all citizens, including those not liable for tax, but several key dates are already known. Here they are:

Deadline Date
Opening of the 2025 tax campaign Thursday, April 10, 2025
Paper declaration Submission deadline: Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at 11:59 PM
Online declaration

(departments 1 to 19 and non-residents in France)

Deadline: Thursday, May 22, 2025
Online declaration

(departments 20 to 54)

Deadline: Wednesday, May 28, 2025
Online declaration

(departments 55 to 974 and 976)

Deadline: Thursday, June 5, 2025
Receipt of the tax notice Between July 25 and August 1, 2025
Refund of overpayment End of July 2025
Adjustment for tax credits Summer 2025
Payment of the tax balance End of September 2025
Adjustment of the withholding tax rate September 2025

Once the paper or online declaration is submitted, taxpayers receive their tax notice during the summer, which verifies the income they declared. Also, by the end of July, some might receive a refund for overpayment. Essentially, this is when the tax authorities return money because they collected more taxes than were due. The summer is also the time for the adjustment of tax credits, notably when families receive their balance for childcare expenses.

In September, some taxpayers need to settle the balance of their tax due, which affects those who still owe money to the tax authorities because they underpaid during the year or received an overly large advance on tax reductions or credits at the beginning of the year. Come fall, the adjustment of the withholding tax rate is also implemented. In any case, you can find the detailed tax calendar for both individuals and businesses on the impots.gouv.fr website. Simply type “individual tax calendar” or “business tax calendar” in the search bar, and you’re all set!
