The first day of school can be nerve-wracking for kids, so let’s not make their school experience any harder.

Starting kindergarten is a significant event for children and their parents alike. It often marks the first real separation, the first steps into a group setting, and sometimes, the first tears. Many questions arise: Will my child fit in, communicate effectively, and be understood? Added to these concerns is a familiar worry for many families: bathroom independence. Some children are not yet fully capable of using the restroom alone, and something as simple as removing pants can become a daunting task. In this scenario, a very practical detail can make all the difference in a child’s day—starting with what they wear.

On TikTok, a kindergarten teacher has taken it upon herself to offer a warning to all parents as the new school year approaches. In her video, she emphasizes that clothing choices significantly affect children’s daily lives at school. Her message is plain: It’s not about style or trends, but about comfort, independence, and sometimes even safety. She particularly points out that some outfits, while practical at home or stylish for a first-day photo, can complicate a child’s life… and the teachers’. “Think about your children’s well-being and make life easier for the teaching assistants and teachers,” adds @par.nayge.

This teacher strongly advises against laces and “difficult-to-wear shoes that require a child to use a finger to slip into them,” as well as shoes with large platforms that are unsuitable for young children. Also to be avoided are belts and scarves that can pose a hazard, along with jewelry, and tight overalls and pants that are difficult to remove and can prevent some children from going to the restroom by themselves.

She encourages the use of basic, elastic-waist pants and soft, Velcro shoes that are easy to put on and take off without assistance. These items can hinder a child’s movements, cause issues during group activities, or simply slow down the independence that is so crucial to foster from the start of the school year.

Beyond clothing, the start of school is a chance to teach your child to manage certain tasks independently: opening a bag, washing hands, and recognizing their own belongings. It’s also helpful to discuss daily routines with them to ease their concerns about what will happen. Finally, a simple yet valuable tip: label all belongings, because between two forgotten sweaters and three pairs of identical shoes, it prevents a lot of mix-ups. Starting kindergarten is a shared adventure: let’s make it smoother right from the choice of outfit.
