Researchers have examined our eating habits and their impact on our wallets…
When discussing diets, we often focus on their health benefits or their role in weight loss. Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables every day is indeed essential for maintaining good health and physique. This time, however, scientists have conducted a study to precisely quantify the financial savings associated with certain diets. Notably, one diet, which is more restrictive than others, could save individuals approximately $1.90 per day, adding up to around $700 annually.
According to Dr. Hana Kahleova, this low-fat diet could also help “prevent or improve conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease”. This refers to the vegan diet, which includes fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, and excludes meat and fish. The research team also compared the cost of this diet to others, like the Mediterranean diet or a “standard” diet. In total, 506 individuals participated in this comparison, recording their food expenditures each time. The costs were 19% lower for those who followed the vegan diet, which saves $3.05 per day by not purchasing meat, dairy products, or fish. These savings help offset other expenses such as vegetables, grains, or meat substitutes like plant-based proteins.
Furthermore, the study authors also revealed which type of diet is the most expensive. Indeed, they found that the cost of a Mediterranean diet could increase by 6%. “While food costs remain stubbornly high, consumers should consider replacing meat and dairy with a low-fat vegan diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, potentially saving over $650 per year on their grocery bills compared to a standard American diet, and over $870 compared to the Mediterranean diet,” suggests Dr. Kahleova.
It’s important to note that vegans do not consume any animal products (no meat, milk, eggs, or honey…). In addition to following the same diet as vegetarians, vegans do not limit their lifestyle to just food: it is a way of life that excludes all products derived from animal exploitation. For example, a vegan would not buy cosmetics tested on animals or furniture or shoes made of leather.
