“My favorite summer drink” – incredibly refreshing and unbelievably easy to make, this Andalusian cocktail is all the rage right now. It’s perfect for those warm summer evenings!
“It’s my favorite summer drink,” says a Spanish user; “I prefer it over sangria, it’s less sweet!” admits another. In Spain, this cocktail has officially surpassed sangria. It’s that popular! Locals love it for its lightness and refreshing qualities, but also for its simplicity. Unlike sangria, it doesn’t require any marinating time and can be whipped up in a minute! Its popularity has exploded on social media and it’s now gaining traction beyond its borders. In the United States and across Europe, it’s increasingly favored in bars. In Germany, it’s even on the verge of eclipsing the famous Aperol Spritz, reports the German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau. We’re sharing the viral recipe here!
While this beverage is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity, its origins are not recent. According to legend, it was created one summer evening in Cordoba, Andalusia, in the 1900s. A bartender named Federico Vargas came up with a brilliant idea to serve a festive and refreshing drink to his patrons: he mixed red wine… with soda! The tinto de verano was born. This cocktail, which literally translates to “summer red wine,” quickly became popular in bars and is now a timeless classic. The recipe is incredibly simple: just pour equal parts red wine and lemon-flavored soda (100 ml each for one serving) into a glass filled with ice cubes. Stir well with a spoon, optionally garnish with a lemon slice, and it’s ready to enjoy!
Tasting verdict? “It’s the perfect cocktail to beat the heat!” concludes the user. For an even more refreshing effect, it is recommended to choose a fruity red wine with a low alcohol content. A gamay or grenache would be ideal.
So, are you ready to swap sangria for this refreshing cocktail? Light, quick to prepare, and full of sunshine, the tinto de verano has everything to win you over this summer… and for many summers to come. Time to give it a try!
