Head-Turning Sangria Without the Hangover
Ever experienced the pounding headache, dry mouth, and upset stomach that come with a hangover after a night of overindulgence? It’s a common aftermath, and surprisingly, it doesn’t always take much alcohol to trigger these symptoms. For some, the effects can start from just one drink.

The way alcohol affects individuals varies based on several factors. On a personal level: genetic predispositions or lower body weights often mean lower alcohol tolerance. Environmentally: for instance, drinking on an empty stomach can speed up the absorption of ethanol into the bloodstream (hence why it’s wise to nibble on some snacks), and hot environments can increase dehydration caused by alcohol’s diuretic effect. It’s also worth noting that alcohol can negatively interact with many medications.
Some cocktails can be particularly misleading. They’re often sweet and go down easily, similar to drinking fruit juice, which can mask how intoxicated you are. Take sangria, for example; beneath its delightful mix of citrus, apples, peaches, and nectarines, it not only contains wine but also stronger spirits like Cognac.
To avoid being caught off guard, try the non-alcoholic white sangria crafted by Margot Lecarpentier, the cocktail expert from the Ducasse Group. In a 50 cl carafe, mix 20 cl of white grape juice (or well-brewed and cooled white tea) with 15 cl of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, and ½ teaspoon of orange blossom water (though any flavor from your pantry will do: bitter almond extract, rose water, vanilla extract…). Then add 4 strawberries and 6 basil leaves chopped into small pieces, 2 slices of cucumber, and 3 slices of lemon. Stir well, then let it infuse for 24 hours in the refrigerator. This creates a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, mimicking the taste of a true sangria… without the dizzy aftermath.
Instead of fearing the next day’s hangover, why not reinvent the aperitif with clever and tasty alternatives? Margot Lecarpentier’s non-alcoholic white sangria demonstrates that you can combine sociability, refreshment, and complex flavors without a drop of ethanol. Raising a glass can also mean maintaining clarity and creativity. Give it a try this summer without any reservations.
