A New Tool for Thieves: Unseen Devices

There’s a new tool that thieves are using to mark their next target: a device that mechanics are finding more and more frequently on vehicles, hidden in places the owner would never think to look.

Everyone Is a Potential Target

It could happen to anyone, and it’s nearly impossible to prevent. Who has the time to thoroughly search their car every day for a tiny detail that almost no one is aware of? Even if you did think of it, knowing where to look is another challenge. This is why it’s the perfect tool for thieves: it’s inexpensive and easy to obtain online, and it can be installed on a vehicle in just a few seconds without the owner noticing.

With this new technique, thieves can learn all about your schedule and choose the perfect moment to strike, especially when they need it most. These aren’t just small-time, isolated thieves looking for an opportunity. Instead, these schemes are often orchestrated by large, organized networks that are ordered to target specific brands, models, or colors of vehicles, or even particular spare parts.

The Use of GPS Trackers

To steal a car without trouble, when the owner is away or busy, criminals are using GPS trackers. In a report aired on TF1, automotive professionals stated that they are finding trackers hidden on their clients’ cars more frequently, especially during maintenance checks. “The thief can slip it right under your windshield, on your grille,” explains Pablo Joao, a mechanic in Vanves. Other drivers have found them inside their rearview mirrors, hidden behind the mirror. Well-known examples include Apple’s AirTag, but many similar models are sold at low prices online. These trackers are used to “study the vehicle’s movements, thus the lifestyle of the owners,” according to Jean Delene Moissy, a member of the national police union Alliance Seine-et-Marne.

Protecting Yourself from This Rising Threat

Fortunately, there are a few tricks to try to protect yourself against this growing threat: free apps to install on your phone, or portable detectors that can identify the signals emitted by these devices by scanning for foreign signals (GSM, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.) around your vehicle. While these solutions aren’t guaranteed to work 100% of the time, they offer a first line of defense for individuals concerned about their security.
